I've been having problems since last week - if I try to open IE, it shuts down after 2 seconds and so with my other files (My Documents,My Pictures, etc.). I'm trying to establish whether it's to do with my system unable to update to XP Service Pack 2 as it's claming that my Windows is not genuine or it is pirated.

Is anybody here experiencing this problem?

disconnect from the net, and reconfigure your auto updates to disable or ask first, then retry.... if it still continues u can knock that outta the equation.

    :)

SP2 wont install on many copies of XP as it checks for the 2 main key codes distributed with the pirate copies. It is built into the auto update now as it is classed as a critical update.

Ok, that's fine but can someone tell me what this message really means: The instruction at "0x020f26b8" referenced memory at "0x001f7000". The memory could not be "read".
This is the message I get when I attempt to open IE before it shutsdown, so for the meantime, I have to use Mozilla Firefox to be able to browse.

It doesn't tell you a lot that mere mortals could understand, or at least use to decipher the problem.

    Try repairing Internet Explorer.

Go to Start, Run and copy and paste the following the press O.K.

    rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

You will need your Windows CD.

    Many thanks to you, Insomniac.

But I will only be able to do this when I get a replacement CD for my Windows since mine got lost when I moved house. I have contacted Microsoft in Sydney and I was told to produce a proof a purchase before they can give me the cd for $40 (rrp$165). Now, off to turn the house upside-down to look for the receipt!!!

Yeah, you will need the CD, if not now then later.

Not much you can do without it unfortunately.

    Good luck.

If I install a genuine Windows XP HE over the pirated/invalid software, would I lose all my files created under the pirated version (which is actually an XP Professional which my partner installed after a complete hard drive clean-up because he couldn't find the original CD for Home Edition)?

I have heaps of photos, videos, music and other downloaded stuff - I lost all files the first time because I didn't transfer them to a cd. Will this be necessary this time since what I will install is a genuine stuff?

I really can't say with any certainty if installing a genuine version over a pirated one will work without any problems, regardless you still need to create a backup of these files or any other that you value.

I've just realized I won't be able to save my files before the installing the genuine Windows because I have not been able to view (and keep it open) all my Windows Explorer applications (explorer.exe) - My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, My Computer, My Network Places, Control Panel, Printers & Faxes, Search, and the Internet Explorer.

Is there any other way to do this, something I can work my way around it?

P.S. And to add more insults to injury, now I can't burn cd's or play vcd's. This whole PC system if STUFFED!!!!

Well...I guess no one knows the solution. Thanks, anyway!

do you have access to another computer (friends or relatives)? if you do, then i'd take out my h/d and put it in another computer and get what you can off of it (i'd write down what you want, where it's at, etc., so you don't forget anything.). basically, you'd take out your h/d, put it in their computer (jumper setting - as a slave), change their jumper setting to a master, and have at it.

if it doesn't boot up, check the bios setting(s), and/or check the jumper settings (my other computer didn't like master/slave configuration, and i had to put both as "CS".

or you could buy another h/d, and install the os on there, but i'd disable (unplug) the 2nd h/d (your current one), while you install the os, then plug it back in afterwards. somehow my 2nd h/d got corrupted during an os reinstall, and i'm currently getting the stuff off of there with recovery software.

either way, i'd diable any passwords you have (startup, etc.), so you don't have any problems. g/l - sos

If you have more than one partition you can put your important stuff in the second partition and install the new xp on the first.Make sure you only format the first partition while installing.
