I have a Radeon 7500 video card. And a Creative Media Audigy sound card. I have just upgraded to Windows XP.

When I go to play games (specifically Counter Strike) the computer came up with anerror message that says unable to find recommended program to start will now start in software mode. Also when I restarted my computer my sound doesnt work even after I reinstalled my Sound driver.

Are you using the latest XP compatible drivers for your hardware?

What is the exact error message verbatim?

Are there any ? or ! in Device Manager?

I do not know, it doesnt show up anymore, only the first time. But it still runs in software mode where there is no sound and the graphics are AWEFULL! I even tried reinstalling it for Windows XP.

Do you have any errors in Device Manager?

Try running the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. (Start, run and type in dxdiag then OK)

Thats the weird part though... It says that the device is working properly and none have the ! or X. And the dxdiag didnt work either.

What do you mean dxdiag didn't work? What happened when you tried?

What version of DirectX do you have installed?

I tried testing the sound in dxdiag and it said failed the test. I have direct x9.

Look on the Creative site and make sure you are using the latest compatible XP driver for your card.

( For DirectX, the latest one is 9.0c )

I saw another post of yours where you say you upgraded from ME to XP?

Did you upgrade, or format and install XP?

Radeon 7500 is kind of an old card. I believe it's only capable of a 2x speed. Check the settings in the Bios to make sure XP didn't bump the clock up to 4 or 8. I had the same problem with my 9600 & it set it up to 8x when the 9600 would only go up to 4x.

Also you could try a third party driver from here.

Omega adds a lot of features you wouldn't normally get from ati.

    Hope this helps :D wingnut

1: I had to uninstall XP. Man, my computer went way faster and was better but I couldnt get either of my two drivers to work. I had no problems with Windows XP. But then I would have to install XP again. Can someone give me maybe a step by step? Plus, I got to make SURE it will work.

2:And no I upgraded from ME. I think that this would solve my problems with XP if I formated the drive first.

3: However, I could not get internet on my computer till my dad did something but he doesnt remember what he did though. I recieve wireless internet through a Linksys Wireless G router. I can get connected but when I go to try to get on the internet it doesnt go anywhere.

Thank you Wingnut. I will try that.

I hope that this isnt too much trouble but do you think that you could give me a link to the drivers page? I am bad at navigating through sites.

Your first problem is you upgraded from ME.

ME is flaky at the best of times. When you upgrade, there are still heaps of files left that can cause problems.

I know, I am going to download the drivers that I need and format my hard drive, then install the drivers. But I want to EXACT link to the page with the driver.

Also, I still need help with my Creative Media problem.

I don't know the exact model or your details, but Creative drivers can be downloaded from HERE.

I suggest you also get the latest motherboard/chipset drivers.

If you are unsure of your hardware, use EVEREST.

Re: Windows XP Problems HELP Please....

Wow, Can someone help. Here's what happened to me.

I was Decrypting a movie with DVD Decrypter and once it was done my computer shut down and restarted. But when it restarted it wouldn't load Windows. Kept going to NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart. and it kept doing the same thing. I tried to make a startup floppy by having a friend search windows and copying the files Boot.ini,NTLDR and another one I can't remember off hand, but I searched another computer for these files and to no avail i could only find the boot.ini file and not the other 2 required.... So I got frustrated and ran a Giga-Byte restore utility that came with my motherboard and presto my windows loaded. But everything is gone...Files, Pics, Folders, Drivers I mean Everything. Is there any way to recover these Lost items. A disk recovery tool Maybe. I mean I had Pics of my mom on my HD and she has passed away and I can't get them again. I set restore points in case something like this happened but couldn't get to them once this happened....What Should I Do??? I'm lost. Please if anyone can help it would be deeply appreciated. This is the only Computer I have to access the Internet. The one computer I was searching the startup files on is a pent 300mhz and and no way to access the internet until i restored this one with Giga-Byte utility.

    I'm running:

    Windows XP Pro
    Giga-Byte Motherboard
    AMD Xp-2600
    768 megs Ram
    WD 1600 Hard Drive

Thanks for any and all Help...

    Pun
