Right, found this old laptop I used to use quite alot before it broke, and it's been hidden away for a little while..

first of all, windows didn't boot at all, it would get to the loading screen, then restart its self and carry on like that forever...

So, I burnt a Ubuntu live cd, went on and save all my music photos programs etc to my ext hard drive.

Tried to actually install Ubuntu but it threw up an error, I was forced to restart. NOW the laptop won't boot at all, I get an error after the BIOS memory check..:

I've looked all over and can't find anything about this error, i know that GRUB is something to do with Linux, but honestly, i know almost nothing about OS' so i've no clue really.

I have a windows xp professional disk, all I want to do is reinstall it fresh.
when i put the xp disk in and set the boot device as the cd rom, i get the same error

any help greatly appreachiated, if you need anymore info, i'll be checking up often :) thanks!

Grub is a boot loader that is put in the MBR of the HD.

If you got the live CD to work you should be able to get the XP CD to boot as well. If the windows CD will load select recovery console and try fixmbr command. [Unplug your external before doing anything].

EDIT!: that ethernet part bugged me, so i went into BIOS and changed the boot device that was set to lan, to CD ROM, and now im in windows set up ;) woop

I managed to get the XP CD to boot now, I get another error that i'm currently looking up, but will post here aswell..

which i guess means its trying to access a floppy rather than a cd rom?
the bios is set for the 1st boot device to be the cd rom
