This seems easy enough to fix, but I am completely computer illiterate. Which is why I signed up here, haha.

Anyways, check out a screenshot of my desktop:
    http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b189/Infamous_Cheese_Bandit/ScreenShot011.png

Notice how the names of the icons (and the icons themselves) are highlighted in white?

How do I fix that? They used to be transparent, but I accidentally chose the color to be white under the display properties.

I'm sure there is a way to fix this. It looks awkward. haha.

    I'd appreciate any help guys.

Thanks a lot and nice to meet everyone. :)

Go into Control Panel, when viewed by Category View, click on Performance and Maintenance and choose Adjust Visual Effects. When it opens, scroll down and check the box next to "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop".

Well, the box was already checked.

I unchecked it, then re-checked it.

    Nothing changed. :(

Right click on Desktop > Arrange Icons By > Make sure that “Lock Web items on desktop” is unchecked.

    Then try BJ's suggestion again.

This one had me puzzled for ages once. I spent many an evening trying to find how to do it.

    Control Panel
    System
    Advanced
    Performance
    Settings
Check the box that says, "Show Translucent Selection Rectangle"

Let us know if it works for you :)

It's not the "Show Translucent Selection Rectangle", that's when selecting items.

Right click on desktop, properties, appearance tab, effects button. Check "show shadows under menus".

Ah! None of it is working guys.

Okay, here's what happened. I was in MS Word, then I edited a picture on there (by making it look water mark).

So, I right-clicked that picture, trying to copy it from MS Word and paste it to my desktop. (For some reason I thought that would work.)

Right after I pasted the picture to my desktop I got this message:

In order to add this to your Active Desktop, you need to save a copy of the picture,

    Do you want to continue?

    Yes/No

Not knowing what the hell that meant I selected "Yes."
Welllllllllll, to my dismay, right after selecting yes I resulted in those ugly white highlighted icons.

    I hope that helped? lol

Right click on your Desktop and select Properties. Then click the Desktop tab and then the Customize Desktop button. Now in the next window that comes up click the Web tab. Make sure at the bottom that Lock desktop items is unchecked. Then in the Web pages: box delete all items but My Current Home Page and make sure it is unchecked too. Then click OK. Apply. OK.
