    hi,

i'm using an hp pavilion with an intel 820d processor, 1gb ram, 250gb hd, windows xp pro media center edition.

a few weeks ago my computer suddenly restarted while i was installing lavasoft ad-aware and got stuck in a reboot loop when reaching the windows xp logo. after researching for a few hours, i came upon this article: http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/uninstall-sp3-from-recovery-console/169701.html

which solved my problem, and allowed me back into my computer. today, it happened again, and i followed that article and it worked. then suddenly it restarted when i opened my game, and happened 2 more times afterwards when i opened itunes and firefox. i would get past the reboot loop using the above article. i then made the mistake (?) of uninstalling service pack 3 from the program list in safe mode since it was still there, and now i cannot use the above method to get access to my computer because i get an invalid file/directory error when trying to uninstall what isn't there.

    i pulled the stop code "0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0x8754b3b2, 0xf79eb26c, 0xf79eaf68)" when i disabled automatic restart on error.

my hp has the recovery console already installed on a separate partition (i think), i can access it before it starts up xp, and i don't have the xp disk. also, looking around a bit more, i a D:\I386\ drive in my recovery center. can i somehow use that to repair xp as if i had the disk?

i have run chkdsk /r , fixboot, and any other "fix" i found during online research multiple times. i downloaded a bootdisk from bootdisk.com, ran scan disk and it said there are no problems, yet it still will not get past the xp loading screen. i don't know how to fully utilize the bootdisk however.

i have work files on this computer i need to get onto my laptop before i even think of reformatting.

i'm very frustrated and seem to have run out of things to try. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks for reading,
    brian

You can obtain a copy of XP setup discs from this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994 download the one required and then try to reboot using the instructions you already have !

Or follow these instructions, which are usually used if you have the XP disc :

1: Watch carefully as the computer starts up after a reboot. Select "Recovery Console" from the "Startup Options" list.

2 : Install the Windows XP disk into the drive if "Recovery Console" is not listed in "Startup Options." Restart the computer. Follow the prompts and select "Repair" or "Recover."

3 : Type the administrator password for the computer. If there is only one user on the computer, it will be that user's password.

4 : Type "cd system32" without quotes when the command prompt appears. Press "Enter," type "ren kernel32.dll kernel32.old" and press "Enter" again. Type "map" and press "Enter."

5 : Type "expand d:\i386\kernel32.dl_" and press "Enter." If the Windows XP CD is inserted into a drive other than "D:" replace "D:" with the proper drive letter.

6 : Type "exit" and press the "Enter" key. The computer will shut down and reboot again. Remove the Windows XP disk. The reboot loop should now be resolved.

Ideally can you get a disc from one of your mates or someone else !

Hope this helps you out !

    Rusty ! :)

very sorry to double post, but i found a fix for that. i no longer receive this error, i am now back to making to the the windows xp logo and then it just reboots.

so basically now what i have is my xp recovery disk on my hard drive, just not burned into cd format...any expert ideas on how to access/utilize this would be great.

also, for the record, i typed in steps 4-6 exactly as you posted, but without an xp disk, and the commands all went through, just didn't resolve the loop issue =(

    thanks,
    brian

Hi there you can use a program called Imgburn to burn an ISO image of your Xp disc to CD Format, using the D:\i386 file
Also you said that you typed in steps 4-6 exactly as you posted, but without an xp disk, and the commands all went through, just didn't resolve the loop issue, well i didn't think it would as you didn't have the disc in the first place, and also the instructions are meant tot be carried out in full !

    Glad you got sorted anyway

    Rusty ! :)
