I have a small windows network with 4 computers all with different opperating systems. Win 98SE, ME, XP Home and XP Pro. Everything works except the XP Home machine. It can see and connect to all the other computers from the XP Home machine but non can connect to it. I think I have narrowed the problem down to the server in the services and applications tab of the computer managment window. It shows that it is not running and when I try to turn it on I get 'error 2001 the specified driver is invalad'. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
BTW: The XP Home machine with the problem is running service pack 2.
    Thanks

XP HOME is not a networking (workgroup) OS. You will be able to see other machines from it, but simple file sharing is enabled and can't be disabled. The only way to share is to set up shares on the drive.

My network connections can be hit and miss. Sometimes you see them, sometimes you don't.

Why not just create a shortcut to the shared folder on the other machine. Then all you have to do is click the shortcut and your there!

or if you wish, a drive mapping

    net use * \\computername\sharename

I don't like drive mappings because the if the machine that you are mapped to is offline, the other machine will run a bit sluggish everytime you open explorer or my computer (keeps checking to see if it's online).

    Scott,

If you go to: Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View
and uncheck (clear) the box next to "Automatically search for Network folders and printers" option, it could help with the sluggishness.
    ;)

Or you should not use the Drive Mapping option "Reconnect at logon" when creating Network Drive mappings.
