I am having two XP problems at the moment...First, when I choose the "Shut Down" option, my computer simply restarts. I have to press the physical button on the case for 8 seconds before the computer will shut down. I've tried adjusting a setting or two in BIOS but to no avail. Any suggestions?

Second, I can't get any of my settings to stay after a reboot. For example. My background color is set to black, but when I reboot, it changes back to a blue color. Also, in internet explorer the font size is set to small, but always shows up as medium...IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!!

Sounds like a virus to me. Have you been able to accomplish a full virus scan?

The reason it reboots is because XP is set to reboot by default on a crash. That means that something you recently installed is not playing well with XP.

You can check what is causing the problem by going here to find out how.

That also may be related to your other problem.

Well i use to have that problem, but then later found out that its actually the power management on my PCI and Network Card. The first one is when your modem is still on when u shut down your machine, but may not apply to u depends on your Network Card and OS. In Window go to your Network Place, select your Active Network Connection u use to connect to internet, right click go to properties, click configure, then click on advance. U should see a list of configuration setting, select on those with " wake up...", in my case there is 2. Make sure they only wake up with OS, other wise they will restart as long as u still have internet connection.

The second thing u should do is to go to Bios when your system booting, go to PCI Power Management, make sure u disable all command with " Wake On..." Then save setting and restart. This should solve your problem. But if nobody else is sharing the modem that u are connected to then the easiest way will be turning off your modem before shutting down your machine. Hope this help.

As for the resetting after reboot, may be u installed some other software which actually take over the Window build in display setting, cant list all cause there are plentty.

Lastly for the internet explorer, also check if u have other browser or software running at the background that is configure differently. Or the worst case, thers are some browser tool bar installed. Use HijackThis to scan, but becarefull before u delete them.
