Windows XP Setup Dilema

I am trying to do a format of my hard drive and reinstall windows xp. I put in the xp cd and boot the computer to it. I then start the set up. It goes through the format of the hard drive and gets the point where it is copying files. At this point it stops. Most times on Driver.cab I believe. Not sure about the .cab but I know it is Driver. It doesn't always stop on this file, but It never seems to get past it. I have tried making copies of my windows xp cd and I have also tried 3 different windows xp cd's. Could this be a problem with my computer? Please help.

How long do you let it wait? driver.cab is a large file, and its normal for it to hang out for a bit.

 

I have waited for almost 24 hours. Is that long enough?

Have you considered your CD drive might be on the rocks?

 

I also have a dvd drive. I tried to use that, but the same thing happened.

 

What are the full spoecs of your computer?

 

It is an hp pavilion 7850. I have a 40GB maxtor hard drive. CD-R/RW. DVD ROM. 933 mhz intel pentium processor. Anything much further than that I'm not sure what u need to know.

 

Apart from failing hardware, it may very well be that it's not compatible with XP, especially considering your hardware is dated.

 

Got it to work!!

I restored my pc to its original state and back to windows ME. From there I did an upgrade to windows XP. The cd that I used was one that I had already tried, but this time it worked without a problem. I am now using windows XP and it is running great.
