I am having problems while shutting down or restarting windows. Copied below is a little log I have been keeping as I troubleshoot this problem. It includes a little more detail about what specifically I am seeing and what I have been doing to try to diagnose and correct it. I did a search through these forums and found some past threads that seemed to have similar problems. I tried out some of those troubleshooting techniques. Anyway, here is the log of all my information so far, does anyone have any ideas on how I can correct this:

    Summary Of error:

Computer hangs forever (never makes it to "turn off computer") and hangs on "shutting down" screen. This is during a Start -> Shutdown (or restart). When I pull the battery, the system will then hang after the "Windows" screen is displayed (the one right before the users page.

Programs loaded around the time of problem:

This gets complicated but I may have loaded a lot of programs. (I don't shut down my computer that much). However, I have uninstalled everything that could have possibly been loaded during that time frame.

    Troubleshooting stuff attempted:

    1) System Restore to last time I remember shutting down normally (didn't work)

    2) Shutdown -l (this shut it down but only to the user screen (login screen), I need it to shutdown and or restart all the way)

    3) "Safe Mode" - (it did restart once in the safe mode but I haven't been able to repeat this, all other times it hangs on a file called windows/system32/drivers/agp440.sys. After looking in the device manager this appears to be under system devices and is called the processor to AGP controller.) I tried to update the driver but it says the one I have is good and it says it is fuctioning properly in device manager, so I don't know what else to do here)

    4) "Safe Mode w/ networking" - It has never restarted under this mode, it always hangs on a file called windows/system32/drivers/agp440.sys (see further comment above about this)

    5) Restart with last known good settings - The system now only seems to boot correctly with this selected

    6) MSCONFIG - (still had the problem when I turned off all services, startup items, system.ini, and win.ini.)

    7) I did have norton antivirus (it had been working since I got the computer with no conflicts, but I heard this can cause problems, so I uninstalled it and the problem still occurs)
    * I did run a full system scan (with updated virus definitions) right before I uninstalled it and it didn't show anything
    * Occasionally (happened once or twice out of about 30 shutdowns) during the shutdown (before the software was uninstalled of course) I did get an error with this software the error was: NAVAPSVC.exe Application error - Instruction at 0x00400A31E referenced memory at 0x00000. The memory could not be read.
** In any case, I uninstalled the software and It still hangs on the shutdown screen with no other messages

    8) Event Viewer -
These errors appear during start up (they only occur during the "Restart with last known good settings" cause I have removed these programs
7000 The Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified.
7000 The ScriptBlocking Service service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the path specified.

The system cannot find the path specified.
7000 -The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    SAVRTPEL
    SYMTDI

    9) Ad-Aware - It showed some spy ware but I quarantined and deleted all those and the problem still occured

    10) AIDA32 Information

I just tried Updating the driver for "display adapters" (NVIDIA GeForce4 448 Go). I am still seeing the same stuff at shutdown and startup.

is it possible that it could be a physical thing?hardware

I read some where that someone had a similer problem
with a hardware that is also used in safemode(that should narrow it down. .

    hmm. .dunno
    I'll do a google

Well, it may be hardware but before I look into that I'll try a reformat of the harddrive and reload. However, I also don't want to do that until I have tried everything else possible.

when you uninstalled norton did you get all of it?
    add/remove doesn't get it all
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2001092114452606
(there should be something there you can use)
    or
    try diagnostic
then type services.msc in the run line and disable norton and symantec services
    and see what that does

    disable the Agp440.sys service

I didn't want to hijack your thread, but just a couple days ago I started having the same problem at shutdown. I have not installed nor removed any programs, drivers or hardware. Only type of overall system utility I run beyond anti-virus & firewall is Bootvis.

I have searched here as well as Google & MS Knowledge Base. Nothing that fits my situation. I've also updated & run Spybot & Ad-Aware to rule out that. Have not noticed any performance issues, just the shutdown thingy.
