We can never have too much information on a problem to help use to help you!

Some system specs may help if you dont know what you have inside your PC then this will help http://www.majorgeeks.com/download183.html

other info that will help are.....

    1. Has this just started happening? if so what did you install ( software or drivers ) or change on or inside your PC ( Hardware )?

    2. Do you see and are able to click the Shutdown button or when you click shutdown does it freeze on shutdown @ say "saving your settings" ? ( 2 different issues are here Shutdown or Powerdown )

    3. Does this happen in Safe Mode? ( f8 @ boot )

    4. Do you have Critical MS updates including SP1?

    5. Are hardware drivers upto date?

His response to Halo's third question was yes.

What we need is a good hardware description and a list of programs that are running...

Then again, it may be as simple as running some AV, and adware progz.

Correct, thread starter needs to read the first response and follow the link to get help. We are not mind readers, but we can guess as to your problem all day long. I can come up with a good 30 or more possibilities off the top of my head.

loc1183 please provide the information requested so your not wasting our time with responses that may not be appropriate for your machine.

Apart from your system specs which will help a great deal,

I have one other thing for you to try... A hunch of mine is that a program is not terminating and that is making your shutdown hang... now tracking this down needs you to to be patient, first off hit CTRL_ALT_DEL and bring up the task manager.. then in the applications tab are their any running apps in their if so stop one and shutdown.. if thats not the one that lets your PC shutdown go on to another... do this with your system tray also.

Check in Task Manager also in the Processes tab are their any processes using alot of CPU time ( apart from System Idle Process as that is normal to be at 90%+ when the PCs doing nowt )

as General Lee Stoned said above look in the event viewer as it can list any errors at around your time of shutdown.

    Yes..... service control manager

Any event ID number to that error in service control manager?

also I'm going to take a BIG step backwards..... WE really need your system specs as they will be of great help, plus as Gottheit has pointed out have you done a full Anti Virus and spyware check? ( cheers Gott forgot that one )

Make sure your AV profram has latest updates to virus files or you can always use http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ which is a free online check and to check for spyware use http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=506 which is also free make sure to click update once you installed the program to get latest files.

as if its your system process thats at 77-90% usage then somethings hogging cpu time as generally that one doesnt hog too much cpu time.

Great so I would gather that the combined AV and Spyware checks didnt find anything?

As to the info on Specs that may help in my second pots their is a link to a program called Aida32 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download183.html download and run this app once running on the top menu bar you will see report click that and then Report Wizard > Next > pick System Summary only > Next > pick plain text > Finish > the program will generate a report save this report to a file > open that text file up from the saved location.

Once opened the part of the report to copy and paste into a post will be like mine below.

    General_Lee_Stoned BuZZed Lightyear

hi loc i think your main problem is the quicken do you really need this if yes try updating to the newest version if not try uninstalling then re-installing the software
same goes for your kodak camera software
    these programs have been corrupted
make sure to reboot after uninstalling before re-installing

let us know how it goes

Also on uninstall of Quicken when it asks to uninstall all shared files click YES as MRTRATE is a shared file ( so Inuit say ) and will be left on the system.

thanks for pointing that out Halo
ive never really had much to do with quicken so i had no idea about that and seeing as MRTRATE is the problem file leaving that behind would have defeated the object :)

nothing beats teamwork hey, thats why i really enjoy this forum compared to some ive been on :D

True True many minds tend to overcome most problems

Me too GLS.. I use MS Money so its been a learing curve on Quicken for me too.... but I do think we are on the right track its a process still running and not terminating at shutdown making the PC hang...

I have come across something else about Quicken and its background tasks but lets wait to hear from Loc on your last suggestion or reinstall and update software and drivers.
