windows xp shuts down with no notice

I am running win xp home ed. internet explorer 6.0 my problem is that my computer is only a couple months old and i really don't know my way around. my computer shuts down and restarts unexpectedly and it doesn't matter whether i'm surfing or not. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Hi Amy,

Right click on MY Computer > click Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery

UNcheck 'Automatically Restart' and put a check in 'Write an event to the system log'

The next time it happens you should get a 'Blue Screen of Death' (not to worry) with some important info: a filename and an alphanumeric code. Write that down and post it back here so we can narrow it down for you

 

Another thought: does this problem occur in Safe Mode?

(tap F8 when booting starts, choose Safe Mode from the menu that appears)
