Windows XP size on C:

I just noticed that the size of windows on my C drive is a whopping 4.37 GB! I am not sure how and why this is so. I noticed lately that the speed of my computer is very slow. Unfortunately I am in the midst of a lot of pending work and reformating is not an option at this stage.

Any suggestions how I can reduce the size and increase the speed if possible?

The laptop is having mobile processor 1.4 with 512 mb ram installed and is a Dell D600. The hd is 40 GB with C being 10 GB intotal and 2 GB free space.

I also noticed a lot of folders in Windows folder stating with $NTuninstall which are taking up space. Can they be deleted?

Any input would be appreciated.

Hi

I would use CCleaner and clean up your HD and its temp folders first.

Then yes you can remove the $NTuninstall, as they are the uninstaller files for all the Microsoft updates you will have done, however you will loose the ability to uninstall any of them if you have issues that require one of the KBs beening uninstalled, but if your PC is working fine then delete or burn them to CD as a backup.

Remove all but the last known System Restore point, to do this right click in My Computer your C drive and choose properties > click Disk Cleanup > click More Options tab and under System Restore click Clean Up.
