Windows XP\SP2 in my registry?

Okay, so I said last night that Windows Update was telling me that I still needed the 823980 (blaster) patch, and my update history confirmed that I already had it.

    Today, I read
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319109
and it said that if I had this problem, I should try a re-install of the patch, and if that didn't make the WU scan stop reporting that I still needed the patch, I should go into the reg key
    LM\Soft\MS\Updates\Windows XP\SP1
and delete the entry for the 823980 patch and then re-install the patch and everything would be hunkey-dorey.

Well, I have the KB823980 entry (no Q823980) in the registry, but it's under an SP2 key, with 23 other updates.

I can't get into the KB today, so I'm asking whether someone will take a look and see whether you have an SP2 key under Updates\Windows XP in the reg with all of your (or most of your) patches in it, or has my reg gotten screwed up with an update key that shouldn't be there.

(Everything except WU is working fine. I'm just wondering about this.)

If WU has been under constant attack since the 16th, mebbe this is just another WU glitch. Not the first, by any means. Mebbe it's set to tell EVERYBODY they need the patch, JIC.

I'm really relieved that you have the SP2 key and patches under it, including the KB823980 patch, AS. Thanks.

    Sorry, guys!

I really, honest-to-gawd, never noticed the fact that all of the patches since SP1 are called (and entered as ) SP2. And that's the first time I've seen the key in my reg.

Thanks for the help and support. Again. I will now go stand in a corner and be quiet for a while.

Well, I downloaded the standalone installable patch and installed it. Nothing changed. The registry entry is there and the patch is there in my installation history list, but WU doesn't seem to know any of that.

Ok. It isn't the first time WU has given an incorrect report to somebody. I'll ignore this one, just as I continue to ignore the (non-critical) update that adds the shortcut to the Start Menu and the updates that want to "improve" Windows Messenger or "improve" error reporting to MIcrosoft. Both of those are dead in the water on my machine, and staying that way, and ...
I don' need no more steenkin' shortcuts!

    Thanks, Nick!

I use AIDA32, but I hadn't thought of checking with that to make sure everything was OK. I did, and it is.

I'm OK, my machine's OK. Windows Update is screwed up.

And now, for the news ...

There is nothing unusual about seeing SP2. The SP2 denotes post-SP1 fixes that will be rolled into the SP2 package and released sometime this fall, at earliest.

Hiya, v0l! You musta missed the higher posts in the thread. I admitted that I'd never noticed the SP2 thing in the registry, actually.

And that's the way it was, a while back.

    Thanks, though. :D
