When starting my computer after the welcome screen the next screen is completely blue with no icons nor tool bars at all. I cant do ctrl-alt-del as it says task manager has been disabled by the adminstrator - I can start in safe mode but even when I sart at last know good configuration the same happens - any ideas??

Welcome to MajorGeeks.com, please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis:

    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Then post back in the Spyware Specific forum, it is very likely you have infections about your computer related to your original post. http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=66120

Put your XP CD in to the CD drive and boot to the recovery console

How To start the computer and use the Recovery Console

    Issue the following commands:

    del c:\windows\explorer.exe

    expand c:\i386\explorer.ex_ c:\windows

if there is no C:\i386 then issue this command

    expand d:\i396\explorer.ex_ c:\windows
NOTE: where d: is your CD drive letter - type map at the command prompt to determine your cd drive letter.

You will have to update your system after doing this, but do it after we have determined that it is Malware free.

    Now reboot.

Follow the instructions from my last post.

At the initial boot screen, before the windows screen. Press F1, F2, F10 or INSERT; depends on the make of your computer, to enter the BIOS. Make sure the First boot device is the CDROM, and the Second boot device is your hard drive. Save setting and Exit. Computer will reboot. Make sure your XP installation CD is in the drive.

Maybe taking an easy way out here, but when you enter safe mode, do you get long-winded prompt with a yes/no question at the end? Hitting "no" should open system restore.

Booting into safe mode with command prompt and typing "%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe" (without the quotes, spelling counts! :) ) should open system restore as well.

Not likely to work given that task manager won't open, but might let you restore your computer to a time when you had a desktop (don't overshoot the margin- just restore to a time when you last remember it working, restoring months at a time can cause problems). I would follow the other suggestions first if you have a lot of critical personal/business data on the system, though, since if system restore crashes part way through it could make things worse.

Of course, if you get a working desktop, run through the "read and run me first" steps to make sure the problem doesn't just come back!

I eventually reloaded XP again from start - at least my computer now comes on but my broadband will now no longer connect?
