I booted up Windows the other day but a file had been corrupted in so it wouldn't load and it said run System Recovery with the CD, so I did this, but now it has re-installed Windows and it has moved all my previous files from My Documents into a folder called Back UP on the C: drive but I cannot access the files it just comes up access denied all the time, how the hell do I get into these files again. Confused and annoyed. Thanks

Download the following program and install.

Right click on the folder and click on Unlocker then have it kill the process that is locking the folder and then you should be able to access it.

    Any problems let me know.

Why not click on windows help and suppport, type in Backup in the search window that opens and click on restoring files from backup or some such entry. Then follow the directions. Thing about Unlocker is that if you close down the programs preventing access to the files you want to access it may also take down other lumps of the computer operations.

Unlocker is only for issues were deleing a program is impossible. The original poster wants to access the files in question.

My guess is that you did NOT do a system repair, but a new system install over the existing one.

There are two ways to fix this.

If XP pro, you need to UNCHECK "Use simple file sharing", within "Folder options" and view tab, within explorer (windows key + E).

If XP HOME, you must reboot into safe mode, log onto the administrator account, and do the above XP pro item.

Now, you need to go into (within safe mode if XP HOME) documents and settings.

Right click on the folder you have issues with. Select "sharing and security". Then select the security tab. Now, click the "Advanced" button, then the owner tab. Now, select the administrator account (highlight), check the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and click Apply (NOT OK!). Once this is done, select the permissions tab, and then make sure that administrators have FULL CONTROL on said folder. If it does, press OK, then try accessing your files.
