    i have windows xp on a dell dimension 4800, 2.66GHz,Pentium 4 , 1GB ram.
Since windows is ending their support of xp, i thought i would upgrade to 7 or 8.
the windows advisor for 8 wont run at all, the advisor for 7 ran, everyting will work, only my grapics card would need to be updated to use Aero(??)
when i go to the dell web site, it says that 7 will not run on this computer.
    doesnt state why.
my question is, do you have to use Aero?, is windows 7 worth trying? And if it is, which version?
Or should I just keep using xp until this computer quits?

    Thanks

If so, you didn't finish doing what chaslang requested.

You can't run 7 on 1GB of RAM. (Only Win 7 starter was installed on very low end netbooks with 1GB RAM)
I don't get the choice at www.crucial.com to select a Dimension 4800 so I don't know what the maximum amount that can be installed is. If it is the same computer than is the RAM at 2GB?

If the computer is slow running XP, it will be worse running 7, provided you can find drivers, which might not be possible. I would not advise trying to upgrade a Pentium 4 computer. You'd do better saving the money it costs for Windows and any hardware upgrades and using the funds towards the purchase of a new laptop or tablet to browse safely.

I intend to disconnect my XP computers from the internet. We'll still use the computers, just not on the internet.

    Hi,
There isn't a Dell Dimension 4800 on the Dell website. Maybe it's the 8400?

I saw that too, so I went to the Dell website to get the specs and it wasn't listed. Closest to it was the 4700c :confused

We can't assume that the OP is in North America. This might be a model for another part of the world which would not show up on a North American website.

I upgraded my Dell Vostro 1000 from XP to 7 without a hitch. About $90 for an upgrade disk. Hardly a high-end machine, the Vostro had an AMD processor and 1GB of RAM (which I first upgraded to 2GB). The upgrade was easy - put in the disk and follow instructions. If you can't find Win 7 drivers for your model of computer, the Vista ones on the upgrade disk must be similar; all worked but one. The only one I had to update was the touchpad driver.

The upgrade didn't slow down my laptop at all. You seem to have some issues that need to be addressed before you even consider upgrading.
