How do I remover windows catalogue from the start menu, I’ve taken care of windows update but I can’t seem to get rid of this.

How do I apply a view setting across all folders, each folder I open has enlarged icons which looked all res’ed.

How do I get rid of the splash screen on outlook express, the old way doesn’t seem to work for me?

Can I change the colour of just the taskbar?

I’ve done a fair bit of tweaking using various programs and what I could remember, anybody any extra suggestions on tweaking windows xp

Have you tried some of the tweaking programs? Much of what you want to do can be done via the registry, so many All In One programs do this for you. That way you can restore if theres a problem. Give X-Setup a look for starters.

Windows Catalogue can be removed by just highlighting it then right click mouse and delete, but maybe you need to be in classic style menu ( I just removed mine this way ok )

To apply the same view settings to all the floders... set one up how you want it the pic from the top menu Tools > Folder Options > View and click Apply to All Folders

OE Splash Screen needs a small bit of reg hacking ( the good old way ) Find the key named....

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{EC7994FF-9DB7-4854-B5F1-C3D3956DED35}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0

and look for a Dword called NoSplash if its not their then add a new DWord and call it NoSplash and set its value to 1

*note the letters & numbers in bold are unique to each machine so yours will be different from the above*

As fot just changing the taskbar.... maybe StyleXP should do that for you but have a read of this thread too http://www.majorgeeks.net/vb/showthread.php?threadid=18225

As for further tweaking of XP.. I tend to find most of what I have done here.....http://www.winguides.com/registry/ plus some I find on other forums.

Hope a few of these help ;)

Yep I think its burried somewhere else ( damm I wonder how I got it to delete )

Anyway I cannot test this other method because I dont have Win Catalogue now ... but Download PowerToys for XP and install TweakUI for XP I have a hunch its listed in Taskbar > XP Start Menu you should be able to untick it there.

    Download PowerToys from here

on a side note you will find alot of things to turn off or disable in the policys editor
Goto Start > Run and type gpedit.msc and go here User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Start Menu and Taskbar for start menu items etc

managed to get rid of the stupid windows catalogue, it was in "all users" just deleted the thing straight

I've had really good experiences using Fresh UI from www.freshdevices.com as a supplement to Tweak UI. They don't conflict, and Fresh UI offers a gazillion registry tweaks that you can do and un-do very simply with the program. Nothing you do in Fresh UI happens until you reboot.

I spend a lot of time in the registry, too, but Fresh UI is extremely handy for easy one-click solutions to complex multi-edit registry settings.

I've used it to change about fifty settings over three months, and I've used it to re-set a few of those, and nothing but good has happened to date.

How do i get chkdsk to run before startup like in win2k, had abite of a problem a minute ago with a non responsive mouse and had to get chkdsk to run manually

if you type CHKDSK /F in the command window chances are it will say "could not dismount volume" and ask if you want to check it on boot up next time around..
is that what you're looking for?

    @ Halo,
Thanks for the link to power toys. Most of the things there seem very cool (a few I wouldn't use), but do all of these instal at once and does any of it add to the progs running in the background? I always try to keep that to a minimum.
    Thanks in advance

Handy, but i really would have preferred if it ran every time, see the problems arise when i shut down suddenly, without giving the os a chance

@Tater..... I have only installed TweakUI from all those and it Only runs when you need it from the Start Menu.

@Joe..... This maybe what you want ( I think )

I have one set of regisrty files that I had downloaded in relation to Chkdsk/SFC........In the Zip file attached are both Enable & Disable SFC ( but as you well know a Registry Backup is always advisable )

BUT why dont you try and setup a Scheduled Task to start Chkdsk at bootup

Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks > Add Scheduled Task > Browse ( then locate Chkdsk in the Windows > System32 folder ) highlight > Open > then highlight When MY Computer Starts > Next

and hopefully this will start Chkdsk at each boot.

plus some light reading on Chkdsk

hmm thanks but chkdsk didn't sort it out, main problem is a jerky mouse. its oen of those wireless optic microsoft ones, any ideas, it seems the same way under win2k, and i've checked the batteries

A couple of things to try.........

Try another type of mouse mat or different surface not too shiny tho.

Move the wireless base station a bit nearer to the mouse location.

plus is there any other radio or magnetic devices close?

This seems to be a common problem with wireless mice, thats why I stuck with the normal optical one.

YEa its pissign me off, this is my second one. the microsoft one actually seem pretty god, think i paid about 100 euros for it. tried all those things, still jerky, this is only a recent thing. I try a different type of battery when i get the chance. I wonder if you get these problems using bluetooth

if you're running it under USB then try PS2 and see if the problems goes away. (assuming the mouse came with a USB to PS2 adapter)

Microsoft don't supply the adaptors but logitech do. Tried a different battery brand it all seems to be back to normal. Extremely odd. I have one of the orginal logitech wireless optical, thats just a pain in the arse

Interesting. My MS Optical mouse came with one, they must not do it on their newer shipments?.. and I wonder what was so peculiar about the batteries. Well as long as it's working properly for you though, right?
