I apologise if this appears somewhat longwinded but as I am a relative novice with computers I deemed it better that i covered all the steps I have taken so far.

Packard Bell Laptop Igo 6204, O/S Win XP Home Ver 2002 with SP2 Service Pack,Total Physical Memory768.5 MB, Available Physical Memory 561.59 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB, Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB,Problem Devices Video Controller - Drivers not installed. Nortons Anti Virus, Adware, Windows Defender, Spybot

    1. Computer will not boot up normally,it goes through the sequence and starts to load up gets as far as the windows logo then hangs for 15/20 seconds with blank screen and then switches itself off
    2. Computer will sometimes boot up in safe mode , have done a chkdsk which says all is ok, have been unable to run sfc /scannow in safe mode.
3.Have tried to boot up with the Windows XP Installation Disk, this starts to load up and before it gets to the end of loading the screen goes blank and the computer switches itself off.
4.There are no fault messages that I can see appearing before the computer hangs.
5.The device manager indicated that there was something wrong with the video controller as the icon is coloured yellow
The General Tab for this device indicates that the drivers for this device are not installed.
Clicking on re-install the drivers brings the hardware update wizard up which asks for an Installation CD
I down loaded the appropriate driver set from the Packard Bell Site and burnt it to a CD , when this CD is inserted the computer starts up to look for the driver finds it and starts the down load. 50% into the down load it stops and says it cannot install any further because it requires that the Windows Standard VGA Driver is installed first. I cannot find this driver on the C drive or on the Windows XP Installation Disk.

I would appreciate any advice as to where I can go from here to rectify the problem.

    Thank You !
