I just recently had to go away for a death in the family and when I returned, Upon starting up the compiter it won't shutdown at all now. I have run Ad-aware spybot search and destroy, Ccleaner and nothing seems to work. I just tried a system restore to the date I left and for some unknown reason it still does the same thing. Any help would be much appreciated.

I assume you have also scanned for viruses? What vchecker do you have?

    Try running chkdsk /f
and let us know if that helps.

Here is something you can try.

    1) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
    HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

    Or here is another.

    1. Create a shortcut (Right-click on desktop, select New > Shortcut).

    2. For location, type the following:

    shutdown -r -t 0

    3. Click Next, enter a name for the shortcut ("Restart" is appropriate), and click Finish.

When you click your Restart shortcut, Windows XP will reboot *automagically*!

The "-r" switch tells XP to reboot. If you'd like the shortcut to shut off your PC instead, change it to "-s"; to simply log off, change it to "-l". The "-t 0" sets the timeout (in seconds), so up this value if you find the need for it. To force running applications to close, add "-f" -- be careful with this one!

For more information on Shutdown, type "shutdown" in a command prompt window (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt), or search for Shutdown in Windows XP's Help and Support Center.

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

    Reboot

If still having a problem, make the next change:

    2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

NOTE: The lowest value Windows will recognize is 1000 (1 second)

Also just a shot in the dark, but if you have a Logitech keyboard or mouse that seems to cause that sometimes if you install the older version of the software from the discs with windows xp sp2. Myself and a friend of mine both had the exact same problem, updated all my logitech drivers and software and problem dissapeared.

I have a dial up connection,if I don't disconnect first I won't shut down. I also had a problem with the drivers for my mbo. When I updated to the knew 6.6 nVidia drivers that solved that problem.
