Please help somebody ! I have a Toshiba NB305-N310 and it is preloaded with windows xp. I have been doing lots of research trying to solve my bsod but came to no solution. It says STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0x85BCB510, 0xF7A5D7EC, 0xF7A5D4E8) I am able to get Ubuntu to work on it off my thumb drive and plan on switching the os to that but would like to get my files first from the xp os.

Have you tried booting with F8 to get to safe mode?

I am sorry, I misread the post - if it has two usb slots, and your ubunto runs from the usb stick, and the netbook will start from usb, then you can copy your files to another usb stick

When did you start seeing this error? In my experience it's usually related to malware, an infected atapi.sys driver to be specific.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888372 - The other reason you'll see this, but this is from changing processor types (INTEL to AMD).

    Hello,
If you were able to copy the files per baklogic's suggestion of using 2 flash keys, you may want to return it to it's factory state per the user guide. Page 51

To recover the original factory image using the utilities on your
    computer’s internal storage drive:

thanks for the help everyone but this issue isn't working i've tried to reset it to factory settings and not sure if i'm not doing it right or its just not working. every time i turn on the computer and hold 0 (zero) it doesn't do anything except keep my screen on the same image till i let go then continues to do what it normally does going to my os choice screen and then not letting me do anything still.

You may need to try several times, but give 10 seconds at least before continually trying it, to stop capacitors getting too warm.
You need to check if it has a recovery partition (using another computer can be useful-connecting via a caddy), or, with the Ubunto cd, if its standalone from cd- If it then does not show two partitions, then you will need to come back, and we can try further.
The other possibilities are that as thisisu says,a malware has infected the boot, and we need to look further-

Now I see-- sometimewindows boot gets scrambled hen putting a Linuxos on at the same time, and it the boot ini has been messed up, there lies the problem so, I need to think on this- use the live cd version to see if you have a small partition of around 6 to 8gb as well as others like the C partition, and any linux partitions.

There are other ways to force the recovery partition, one being by changing the partion reference, but I used a different program for that, before now, so I will have to look it up- I know ptedit works, but its not an easy one to find- Come back and tell me what partitions it shows.
If anyone else on majorgeeks has used gparted to sort out a bootable patition, please feel free to come on and help- I need to look back at my archive, as my memory is not that good- I used another program to undelete partitions, and have managed to get right back to a Toshiba original set up with recovery partition using it, but you have to be careful, and choose the right partition to delete, each time- it works, but might be a shade too much for a relative newbe, so I will not offer it, yet.
Gparte apparently can flag the hidden partition (Incidently, I have found on many Toshiba's that the hidden partition is actually the 'D' partition

The program I used was 'pwhe422' takes me a while, as I am not that organised.
Come back with any list of partitions if you can

If the OP indeed does have a recovery partition, it may be possible to get it to boot by using Gparted or Partition Wizard to mark the recovery partition as active. In Gparted, you would highlight the partition and in the file menu click partition>manage flags or right click and select manage flags. Mark it as boot.

Thanks tgell, I have been reading it up, but better for someone like yourself to continue= not quite like other software I have used, but I think it will help if you guode him from here= better to try with what he has than adding more confusion- assuming he has gparted on a disc, as he cannot get into his hard drive, if its on there..........I presume
