I had a similar problem to this before. This may sound ridiculous and may be not related to the problem at all, but what fixed it was when i turned off my power bar and unplugged the power and plugged it back in. I turned on my computer and it worked.

My suggestion would be pressing F8 prior to the XP screen then choosing "Last know good configuration". Otherwise safemode. Were you installing anything new or perhaps updating anything? What was the last thing you were doing? These questions should help you to narrow down the scope of the problem to hopefully render the easiest solution.

As Adrenalyne, and lemming02 said, try to get into safe mode
    Turn computer off/turn it on/tap F8/go to safemode/
If you get into safe mode, click star, Right click My Computer, click manage/click system tools, click Event Viewer, click Application..look for yellow exclamation marks, double click a few of the last ones (you can only do one at a time), and post back here, if youcan.
Other things to try, if able, while in safe mode,.........
1/ If you installed something just before the freeze up, uninstall in the add/remove programs-
2/ If you installed a driver, like video driver, go to that item in Devices , and roll back the driver.
3/ Click start/run/ type in chkdsk /r /click ok (note the space after chkdsk)
at the command type Y ,press enter.

Your system spec would help - video card/on board video ?
