everytime i need to restart my computer it makes it to the windows xp loading screen where the little light moves across the loading bar repeatedly, and then it blue screens. then i restart the computer and it does it again, and again, and again, until finally it loads. it also does this in safe mode as well.

these are some of the errors i wrote down that the blue screen displayed:

    Stop: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF751F0EC, 0xF78A6048, 0xF78A5D44)
    sptd.sys- address F751F0EC base at F74D8000, datestamp 474748e5

    Stop: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0xF78CE05C, 0xF78CDD58, 0xF78CE2E4)
i got that one ^ at least 6 times

    Stop: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0x78CDF60, 0xF78CDC5C, 0xF76579C1)
    classpnp.sys- address F76579C1 base at F7857000, datestamp 48025c05

    Stop: 0x00000050 (0xFFFFFFF8, 0x00000000, 0xFFFFFFF8, 0x00000000)

any help would be appreciated, please and thank you

Errors that keep changing a lot of times mean that RAM is going bad. If you have two sticks of RAM, remove one and see if it boots up okay. If not, remove that stick and try again. Note: because you are using half the memory, it will be noticeably slower but if it works okay with one stick and not the other, you've found the bad RAM stick.

Check your version of sptd.sys and see if it is 1.56 if not, download the first item (32bit) if you are running 32 bit version of XP.
Backup the old sptd.sys then replace your version with this. That might take care of the first error.

i tried to copy it so i could make a backup but windows says it cannot be copied because it is being used. i didnt know what uses it so i looked it up and found this.

if its just a driver for daemon tools, can i just delete it as i dont use daemon anymore?

To answer the 2nd quote - No! That will just create additional problems. You need to look into what is running and see what is using the sptd.sys file as your first quote shows and stop that from running at startup. If you do that, then you will probably eliminate the error message.

i tried taking out my sticks of RAM one by one and i kept getting the same blue screen error, i have 2 512MB and 1 256MB and i doubt that they all went bad at the same time so i dont know what the problem is. after like 10 times of failing it will load windows, but with no specific stick of RAM in, itll work with any of them i just have to try it enough times.
edit(in reference to .sys file) well i was impatient and deleted it because online it said it wasnt crucial to startup, and it loaded fine once. but now when i turn on my computer it says that a folder is missing or corrupted, i think it was something like windows/system 32/config or something like that, almost positive it ended with config even if thats the wrong path.
when i start up my computer my motherboard has some "S.M.A.R.T." monitoring system, and it says that my primary hard drive is "bad," its said this for months now and it always started up fine anyway so i figured it wanst that important. i think maybe the folder got corrupted from my hard drive.
i dont have my xp setup disc but my friend had one and so i but that in the disc tray and set my bios to load that and nothing else, because it wasnt waiting long enough for me to hit a key to load from the cd so i disabled my hard drive, and it wont even load from the cd. it goes to a blue screen where it says its loading and then after a couple minutes of saying every item that is being loaded my computer just restarts.
i have no idea why it would fail to load from the cd, please help me.

every so often when loading from the cd it will blue screen instead of restart, and so far its said these two errors.
    "bad_pool_caller"
    and
    "bad_pool_header"

So wait, you went into BIOS setup, and disabled all boot options BUT the CD-ROM drive? Am I understanding the situtation correctly?

  9. spanktastic2120

    spanktastic2120 Corporal

yes, that is what i did.
i originally had it set to boot them all up but just with the cd-rom first, but then it would only wait about 2 seconds for me to hit a button to actually boot from the disc, and if i didnt it would try to boot from the hard drive and give me error about it having a missing or corrupted file and to boot from the setup disc.

  10. spanktastic2120

    spanktastic2120 Corporal

    the last error read
    stop: 0x0000007F (0x0000000D, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
and didnt have anything about a bad pool

  11. spanktastic2120

the boot disk makes it all the way to "setup is loading windows" and then it blue screens with one a billion different "STOP:" errors.

If your S.M.A.R.T. status is bad that would explain the corruption and errors. HD that are going bad work intermittently until they finally go totally bad and freeze up.

Get the name of your HD manufacturer. Download their diagnostic tool for DOS from their website in ISO format. Burn a CD for the ISO using imgburn or similar image writing software. Boot from that CD. Run the LONG test to see if it can repair the HD errors.

If it can repair the errors it is only a temporary fix but should let you boot up normally for a while.

any advice about all these errors i get even when the hard drive is disabled?

Try disconnecting your hard drive altogether then run a live cd or winternals if the system then remains stable it's likely you have a bad hard drive.

But try the diagnostic tool first as sach2 suggests.

I agree with Sach. Sad part is, isn't SMART supposed to prevent finding bad things out the hard way? Back in the day, I would run chkdsk /r /p to attempt one last boot to recover data...

I'm not sure where XP installation files are loaded, I thought it was RAM but it may use some HD space. You are only disabling the HD as a boot device it could still be used for temporary storage if Windows installation uses it to store files.

I would go with one thing at a time. If the HD has so many errors that the diagnostic can't temporarily fix it then no matter what you do, you will continue to have problems until you replace the HD.

@the mekanic it sounds like SMART has been warning about HD failure for a while now.

no i did more than that. in the bios i completely disabled the drive so that it doesnt get used whatsoever. i removed it from the boot priority list and from the installed devices list. so it cant be used for temporary storage.

  18. sach2

That might be the problem. :unsure

Again, if you have a blank CD and can burn an ISO do the long test only takes 20 minutes tops.

what is a live cd and a winternals?

Yeah, but it doesn't tell you that in black and white...

its a western digital hard drive and i went to their website and downloaded the diagnostic program and burned it to a cd but when i put it in it tells me it cant find a .txt file. so i put it back into this computer and sure enough, the file is right there. so i put it back into the broken computer and tried it again, same error, so i burn it to a new cd, same error. so i guess i cant do a diagnostic test unless you know of something else i can use for it?

  22. spanktastic2120

    spanktastic2120 Corporal

i completely disconnected the hard drive and the xp setup cd still doesnt load. it gets to the point where it says its loading windows and then blue screens or restarts without a blue screen. the blue screen error usually says either bad_pool_caller or bad_pool_header.

Is this the program? http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=502&sid=30&lang=en You download the .iso version.
Are you familiar with burning iso files? You have to use the option to burn "image" file to disk.

    ******
That said. It sounds like you were able to boot to the CD or I don't see how you could get an error. Is your HD re-enabled/detected in BIOS?

  24. spanktastic2120

    spanktastic2120 Corporal

yes and i am familiar with burning isos. i accidentally got the "data lifeguard tools" one first thinking it was what i needed and then realized it wasnt the diagnostic. but it is also an iso and since the tools one was burned with the same program i dont see any reason for the diagnostic one to be not recognizing a file that is indeed in the right directory if i used the same program to burn it, twice.

  25. spanktastic2120

    spanktastic2120 Corporal

i tried using the data lifeguard tools disc to copy over all the data from the broken hard drive to a new one and it didnt work. i dont know how far it got but after 2 hours or so i came back to see that it had encountered an error, which wasnt very surprising.

  26. spanktastic2120

    spanktastic2120 Corporal

windows/system 32/config/system is what is says is corrupted or missing. just thought id come clarify that since i have nothing else to do.
i tried to make a floppy diagnostics thing using the program provided by western digital but it doesnt seem to be working. when i try to load from the floppy drive i get the error "restart and select the correct boot device, or insert boot media now and strike any key to continue"

i moved the faulty hard drive into this computer and ran the diagnostic cd, and it worked. i did a full scan of the faulty drive, and it said that it must first do a quick scan, but once it did the quick scan it said something about some values being below the threshold and to press any key to continue, and when i do it says the system needs to be restarted and to press ctrl alt delete, so i do and then it loads up again and i try to do the scan again and this time it instantly jumps back the page it showed earlier when i did the scan, and tells me about the threshold and says it needs to be restarted, and so in conclusion i cant do the long scan, full scan, intensive scan, or whatever you want to call it, because after doing the preliminary quick scan i have to restart. i successfully did it to the non faulty drive that is in this computer though, no errors.
i dont know why the disc said it couldnt find the txt file on my other computer, im beginning to suspect theres something wrong with my motherboard?
my friend gave me this trial cd of vista to try and install in case i couldnt repair xp on my faulty one, and the first few times it would load up like i had vista installed and it was just like this simple text based repair interface, like what the xp disc looked like, except it loaded, but it said i couldnt use it to repair any older operating systems.
i tried to install it onto an empty hard drive that my friend also gave me, but when it loaded it said that my cpu couldnt support 64 bit.
im lost and all out of ideas, please help me people.

Let's see since you have another computer wit your bad HD attached you could try the Windows based WD diagnostic http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=502&sid=3&lang=en on your faulty HD to see if it will run the extended test. I have to say it sounds like it is in bad shape.

If you have an extra HD your friend gave you then why not try to install XP on that one. You should be able to install XP on the friend's HD with it connected to your regular PC. If XP loads ok then your problems are limited to just a bad HD.

not really because i had all my data on that bad hard drive, if i cant recover everything from it then im screwed. but thanks for the advice.

If you can use your friends HD to load a new XP installation then you can set your damaged HD as slave and try to copy data(music, video and pictures) over to the working HD. You won't be able to copy programs over they will have to be installed on the new drive.

Often, a bad HD will work briefly after a cooling off period. So if you get a HD witth a working OS you can try to transfer data from the bad slave HD until it stops working and then let it cool down for a few hours and do some more.

if i want to copy over programs i just need to get all the program files, application data, and registry entries for them and it should work just fine right?

i took a really old hard drive that was, for a while, just a slave to this computer, and am now using at as the master for my computer with the crashed hdd. i copied over all the information i could, and spent last night putting all the application data and program files and whatnot in their correct spots so all my programs could work. i also copied over all the registry values, and entered them into the registry. i put them into 5 categories, the main ones when you open regedit, and each one told me that some of it could not be entered because it was in use or opened or something. one time it said that it detected tampering with the system or something like that. i restarted my computer because i needed to for some changes i made to take effect, and now i get a blue screen with "system_license_violation" error. im assuming some of the registry values i entered changed the license and now it wont let me load windows. how can i fix this problem?

OK, like Sach told you, you have to re-install the programs. Even if you don't change your user name, you can have difficulty transferring data, if you can at all, when you set your folders to private. Anything I don't need to protect, like ZIP files, apps, music, emulators, or ROMs, I put in a "plain Jane" C:\XXXXX folder for ease of transfer in case of something like this. NOT in a personalized Administrator/User folder.

There are security protocols in place to/that can prevent the type of data transfer you are attempting. Programs that come zipped must be transferred as the .zip file, and then extracted and reinstalled. If you have just an app, you must have all the files that go with that app transferred as well (.bat, .ini, .dll, etc.).

Unless you are a significantly advanced Windows programmer, you will not accomplish the result you desire with the method you are using.

    Keep it simple!!!!!

And, oh yeah, format and START OVER!

Unless you know how to re-write the registry using the Recovery Console.

well until i restarted it and got the license error i had all of the programs working successfully. i just made sure to copy everything and put them all in the same directories they were previously in. but anyway, i ended up formatting it, and then doing a partition to partition copy of the bad hdd over to the newly formatted one.
