hey guys Im new here, I try to research at google about this problem and it leads me to this website and I really needed help. I know my laptop got infected by some kind of virus (sorry im not really familiar with pc). Whenever I turn on my laptop (I run windows xp professional) and when the windows started to open with that baby blue screen that says "welcome" and you hear that windows opening song (u know wht im talking about), then suddenly a weird pop-up window will appear with some weird words on it (not in english) and I feel its kind of a virus or spyware. I can open the Control Panel but it wont let me click on the icons to open them, I cannot open any EXE. files programs except for my internet I use AOL ( I can still surf the net) , I can open the Recycle Bin also my webbrowser AVANT and My Computer. I used the online virus scanner BITDEFENDER and it deleted about 6 spywares and I rebooted my comp after that, but still it didn't solved the problem. I really need help. Also Norton is my antivirus software but its useless right now since I cannot open it cuz its on exe files. Also, I tried the system restore but it didnt help either. i really don't know what to do now. I dont have my windows xp cd since i bought my laptop from a friend years ago and he didnt give me the cd so yeah. Any help will be really appreciated please.

Welcome to MG's Goku_13. Please follow the steps below.

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus RemovalMake sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

    Try downloading this file: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/xp_exe_fix.zip

You will need to do this on another PC because you must extract the file that is in the ZIP file. Since you cannot run any EXE's on the problem PC, do it on another PC. After extractingxp_exe_fix.reg from the ZIP, get it onto your problem PC's desktop. Then double click on it.
This should rebuild you EXE file associations.

See this site for more info: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

yeah, I did exactly what you said, I extracted the file XP_EXE_FIX on my desktop and I opened it with notepad and it says windows registry editor version 5.00 and lots of HKEY_CLASSES stuff. Then I restarted my computer but it didnt fixed anything. Am I suppose to edit anything on it? Also I cannot disable the system restore because whenever I right clicked on My Computer and Properties during safe mode, the window wont popup for Properties. Sorry for asking too many questions. Please help me

You need to merge it into your registry by double clicking on it. You do not want to open it in notepad (unless we need to edit it). What OS do you have (you said XP right)? Did you double click on the .reg file? Did it ask you about adding the contents into the registry?

  7. goku_13

    goku_13 Private E-2

im using Windows XP professional. When I double click on the xp_exe_fix.reg, then a windows pop-up and it says "Windows cannot open this file" then "What do you want to do?" -"Use the webservice to find appropriate program or Select Program from the list". It may be a stupid question but how do I merge the xp_exe_fix.reg file to the registry?

  8. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Double clicking on the file is supposed to automatically do the merge. Are you sure you have the xp_exe_fix.reg file on your Desktop and not the ZIP? If you cannot get EXE files to run, then how did you bring up notepad that you said you ran. And how did you extract it to your Desktop?

  9. goku_13

    goku_13 Private E-2

i downloaded the xp_fix_fix zip file through my other pc and extracted the .reg file from it, then i burned the file though a cd, then I transfer it on my laptop(the one who dont play exe files) and i placed the reg file on the desktop, then i double clicked on it, and like i said from the previous post, the reg file didnt do any merging, instead a window pop up and it says that windows cannot recognize the file and choose a program to run it, so i pick on the program list and I just guess notepad will open it and there we go, nothing happened. hey man i really appreciate your help walking me through this problem. hopefully we'll be able to fix it

If you click Start, Run, and type regedit and click OK, does regedit open up.

  11. goku_13

    goku_13 Private E-2

man, the regedit wont open either, a window pop up saying "windows cannot open this file" again

Does Task Manager run? Press CTRL-ALT-DEL at the same time

You may want to try running regedit and also HijackThis after boot in safe mode.

  13. goku_13

    goku_13 Private E-2

yea the Task Manager is working

Can you provide a list of processes that are running. Ignore the following, they are valid
    svchost.exe
    csrss.exe
    explorer.exe
    iexplore.exe
    lsass.exe
    services.exe
    smss.exe
    taskmgr.exe
    winlogon.exe

Tell me what else you see.

    shellmon.exe
    wuauclt.exe
    avant.exe
    waol.exe
    spoolsv.exe
    ccevtmgr.exe
    wanmpsvc.exe
    spbbcsvc.exe
    sndsrvc.exe
    issvc.exe
    ccsetmgr.exe
    wdfmgr.exe
    ccproxy.exe
    symlcsvc.exe
    oodag.exe
    navapsvc.exe
    wuauclt.exe
    aoltpspd.exe
    mdm.exe
    ati2evxx.exe
    ctfmon.exe

    aolacsd.exe
    alg.exe
    system
    system idle process

I don't see anything obviously bad in that list but try using Task Manager to end the below processes and then try running regedit.

    shellmon.exe
    avant.exe
    waol.exe
    ccevtmgr.exe
    wanmpsvc.exe
    spbbcsvc.exe
    sndsrvc.exe
    ccsetmgr.exe
    ccproxy.exe
    symlcsvc.exe
    oodag.exe
    navapsvc.exe
    aoltpspd.exe
    aoltsmon.exe
    aolacsd.exe

It seems to me that you can run some EXE files. Taskmgr.exe, Notepad.exe, maybe more. Can you right click Start and select Explore? Does Windows Explorer come up? If that does not help, try what I said in message # 12, running from safe mode.

yea i can run a couple of exe files like aol, notepad, and winamp. On my desktop, all the program shortcuts are not working also on the original program files, the only folder that is showing and working on my desktop is Recycle Bin and My Computer. I tried the safemode with regedit and hijack but with no success. I cannot open Windows Explorer

How about this? Click Start, Run and enter c:\windows\regedit then click OK

    Does that work?

You may have more serious issues than not being able to run EXE files. Sounds like quite a bit of your user configuration is messed up. Can you open Control Panel? If so, can you create a new user account. If so, log into that account. How does it work?

The c:windows\regedit did not work either. I cannot open the Control Panel and cannot make a new account either. Do you know what kind of virus does this? Yea its messed up like I double click on some files, they won't even open. And whenever I restart and the blue welcome screen loads, there's always a pop-up window with some weird lines on it. Im using a laptop and the touchpad doesnt even work.

You have too many problems to ID if this is even malware related.
How about Start, Run, and enter services.msc and click ok! Does that bring up your Service list. If so, we should check to see if any required Windows Service have been stopped or disabled. Especially Remote Procedure Call (RPC).

  21. goku_13

    goku_13 Private E-2

yes the services.msc works, it brings up the service list, what should i do next?

  22. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Check to see if any Services are stop and/or disabled. Tell me which ones. Start with the one I already mentioned ( Remote Procedure Call (RPC) )

In fact, what may be easier if it will run is to do the below:

    Download GetService.zip from here: Getservice.zip

Extract the file to a folder where you can find it, then go to the folder and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad file as an attachment too. Call it service.txt.

    human interface device access- disabled
    messenger- disabled

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - automatic
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator - manual

i opened getservices.bat and it says:

    @echo off
    psservice config > getservice.txt
    notepad getservice.txt

  26. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Those are all OK! But was Remote Procedure Call (RPC) actually started?

  27. goku_13

    goku_13 Private E-2

    yea RPC service status: Started

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

I did not ask you to open getservices.bat, I wanted you to run it! But since you cannot open Windows Explorer, that is a little more difficult. You will have to know where you put the files(probably best if you put them in c:\ ) Then you can try Start, Run and enter C:\getservices.bat and click OK.

I'm not sure if this is going to show us anything. You may be heading towards a reinstall.

But perhaps you can first try running sfc (not sure if you can even run it)
Or you can boot from your original WinXP CD and try a Repair.

none of them work, i dont have the windows xp cd since i both this laptop from a friend and he didnt give me one. Is there still any chance I can fix this problem without the originial xp cd?

I would suggest posting this in the Software Forum. This is more of a Windows configuration problem right now. It could very well have been cause by malware but I think right now some of the guys over in the software forum may be able to help you further on this. You really need to be able to merge the patch into your registry but without the ability to run anything I have asked, it is pretty difficult to do that.

I'm going to move this thread to the Software Forum and let's see what happens over there.
