Perhaps you could advise me further please. I was stupid enough to run a Microsoft spyware removal tool (supplied by Microsoft) on my old but still good computer running OS XP pro, all was well till switched it off then tried to start it up again the next day ...... nothing works I can't get it to re load its original XP disk or start up the screen just stays blank. I built this computer some 10 years ago when in my 50 ties and it's been no trouble at all untill I used the removal tool from Microsoft. Any suggestions please. Kindest regards Pamella

 

If the screen stays completely blank from the moment you switch on it's most likely the monitor or its cables, and nothing to do with what you were doing yesterday. On startup the first thing you should see is text at top left as the BIOS carries out its POST - Power On Self Test. If you are able to test with a different monitor that might resolve it, but first check the power and data cables are properly connected and the monitor power supply and monitor power switch are on. Is the system making any noise after switching on?

 

Also make sure the RAM is fully seated in the slot(s). That oversight cost me ~$35 once.
