I have an old computer that I want to network with my new computer so that the kids have something to use to get online with. I am scared that the old computer has a virus or trojan horse on it although all the virus scans i have ever used say everything is fine with it. How do I clear the hard drive and start over with Win XP Professional?

Make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD first, insert the XP CD and boot. This will walk you through the steps of formatting the hard drive, and installing windows on a clean slate.

Well, go into bios (the first screen when booting will tell you the key you have to press - usually F1 or delete)

Look for something like Boot order, or boot device select (it will be different depending on your BIOS) and use the specified keys to change it so that your CD rom is first.

When you do, you may have to be sure to press a key when booting, or the system will default back to the hard drive
