I have a laptop with a 1TB HDD which has 3 partitions and Windows 7 on the first partition, Windows 8.1 on the second partition and Windows 10 on the third partition and I am able to boot to any of them.

Partitioning can be tricky so, ask for help with any of this.

As long as he has one installed, he could partition the drive and install the other. Order doesn't make any difference. During setup and thereafter, the new version would become the default and the other would show in the boot menu on bootup.

I installed Windows 7 on my laptop AFTER Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 were installed.

I suppose you are saying the poster could ignore the 'Warning' Micros0ft give, if they only install and duel boot by partitioning and create separate ones:

    "Warning
    • You must install the older operating system first, and then install the more recent operating system. If you don't (for example, if you install Windows Vista on a computer already running Windows 7), you can render your system inoperable. This can happen because earlier versions of Windows don't recognize the startup files used in more recent versions of Windows and can overwrite them."
Creating a back up of the existing OS installation would be advisable before going further.

mdonah is correct as long as the dual/multi boot only includes versions Windows 7 or later. Win 7, 8 and 10 all use an identical boot configuration database (BCD). If the boot is to include Windows versions preceding Win 7 then they must be installed in the correct order.

Meant to add yes, vital to create a full disk image first before any repartitioning. Ask if you need help - we aren't talking about just backing up files.

Full disk image will be particularly important because of the way Windows 8 and later computers are set up at the factory.

Also, if you're going to install Windows 7, it MUST be 64-bit (x64) because 32-bit (x86) doesn't support your current format of disk.
