After cleaning up some ugly malware, I'm having issues with Windows Media Player10. Running XP professional sp2.
RealPlayer will open and play an mp3, mpg, mpeg (video&audio)
WindowsMediaPlayer10 will not recognize an mp3.
    Message Box:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

Get same error message for .wmv

mpg and mpeg: Will play mpg video but no audio. "Error downloading codec"

Just for and exercise, I loaded Windows Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 It seems to have the same issues as WMP10.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Did a codec update with WM9Codecs.exe but didn't change anything.
