I will plug in my camera, the PC will make a 'ding dong' noise acknowledging that the camera is connected, and it will read data from the camera.. but nothing pops up on the screen. It used to come up with this camera wizard thing that allows you to select pictures on the camera and copy them to a desired location on the computer.

I've gone in through the control panel and under scanners and cameras it shows my camera is connected. I can right click on it and 'get pictures' and it will read data from the camera, but still nothing comes up on the computer screen.

I can still retrieve pictures through PhotoImpact and I can go in through 'My Computer' and get data off of the camera there, but it's a hastle. I want to get the automatic camera wizard back..

I haven't used any tweaking tools on XP yet. BUT now that I think about it.. you know how it does that "which program do you want to use" thing in XP? I MAY have checked the box that says "always use this program" with the camera wizard selected. I don't think it's been able to open since then.

Do you think I should try a tweaking program and see if I can get it to prompt which program to use when the camera's connected again?

Maybe uninstall the program, run a registry cleaner and re-install it ??? Baz

There's no software for the camera installed. The wizard I'm talking about is included in Windows XP.

But it's not a certain file type I'm trying to open. The computer automatically recognizes the camera when it is connected (via usb) and interfaces dirrectly with it.. or at least that's what it used to do...

I don't think I can uninstall the program.. I looked in Add/Remove Windows componets and couldn't find it in there.

    Hi Main Frame.

    Check out MyUninstaller from

    http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,23025,00.asp

It has become my default uninstaller.

As a last resort, provided you have the original software, you can delete the folder and it's contents. Stress the point, if all else fails, and you have the original software, delete the folder. Run a registry cleaner afterwards to pick up any left over entries and re-install the original software. Baz

Guys, he didn't install anything. So uninstallers aren't going to help.

Its also not a file association problem.

    Main Frame,

Go to My Computer. The camera should show up (crosses fingers).

    Right click, properties.

    There is an autoplay tab.

Look familiar? Now you should be able to change the settings you made before and have it prompt you.

That's right, if I had to delete the dirrectory the program is installed in it would be the Windows dirrectory, and I don't think it will let me do that ;).

You were close, it doesn't say autoplay, it's "events"... unfortunately I've already tried this. I tried telling it to prompt for which program to run, and I tried telling it to autorun the camera wizard. Neither had any effect..

I don't know if this helps any, but I ran regedit, searched for camera, and found "Events"-->"Digital Camera Connected"-->in to some other subfolder and it's got the program it uses for the "Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard".

The program is 'wiaacmgr.exe'.. I tried to run this program manually and it gave me the error below. Which is messed up, because when I go to control panel-->scanners and cameras, my camera is already listed there and has no problems communicating with the computer.

Ah nuts I thought that one would work too... did you have your camera plugged in and switched on when using that app from MS? ( just double checking )

the only suggestion or fix I have left is to edit a registry line, well delete it actually SO a backup of that area of the registry is advisable first BUT before we do anything just check these two locations for me.........

    1st
    HKEY_CURRENT USER_\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer

in Explorer there should be this key NoDriveTypeAutoRun what is its value line?

    2nd ( similar location )
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer

what is in the Explorer folder if there is one in there?

The camera's been on, but my batteries are low now, and I don't have my charger with me so I don't know how much more I can work on this today.

In the first location it has a 91 hex.... the second location has the same key, NoDriveTypeAutoRun, with the value 5F 00 00 00

Hello , I've just install my camera software and like main frame it does not show autoplay in camera properties.

backup the second location key using right click export or rename it with a number or something IF backing up after backup delete the key.

reboot and try again... that second location is the problem

@ volatile.. if you installed your camera soft then you wont get the same auto wizard as MF as your camera soft will take over from XPs built in mass driver for cameras.

Crazy question. Is the Windows Image Acquistion service started?

If you're talking about wiaacmgr.exe, no.. it won't run, and it's not in the background either.

No, I'm talking about the service.

    Run services.msc to see.

    The executable for WIA is
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc

Halo is right . what you need to do is back up

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Policies\Explorer

    and delete the NoDriveTypeAutoRun key
