(WindowsXP Home) Winxp sp1 system sign on problem

I helped a family member remove some spyware from their computer. Rebooted several times after the removal with no problems. Now(a day later) when they go to sign on they get to where the desktop starts to load(you can see the desktop background pic but no icons) and then it just signs off returning to the screen where you can choose the account to log in as. The same thing happens in safemode. When I went to do a windows repair it asked for a admin password and of course they don't know it because they say they never put one in when they first installed.
Any Ideas how to get into windows with out a reformat?
Or if you don't pick an admin password when you first load WinXp does it have a default password and if so anyone know what it is?

Thanks TheDoug for the reply. My only problem is I can't get to the recovery console because it wants an Admin password.
