WindowsXP will not boot

When I start the computer, it immediately goes to the screen that offers the 4 options for starting Windows. SafeMode,SafeMode with Networking etc. None of the options will work. If I choose any of the options it runs and then stalls without completing requested start mode, Any ideas what has caused this and how to get Windows to boot correctly?
Any help will be appreciated.

 

Do you have SP2?

Does it give you an option to disable automatic restart in those boot options?

 

Yes I have WinXP SP2. The only options available are SafeMode,SafeMode with Netwoking, another I can't remember and Last Known Good Configuration.

 

If it doesnt give that disable restart...option, try a chkdsk /r from recovery console.

Ive found SP2 systems that do not have that option are not fully booting due to filesystem damage.

 

I am not sure how to access the Recovery Console. Can you advise please?

Boot to your XP CD. Press any key when it says "Press any key to boot from CD....". You'll see some blue screens with white writing and a white bar at the bottom. Just let it load until you see a screen that says "Press 'R' for Recovery Console..." followed by several other choices. Press 'R' and follow the screen prompts. Then follow the advice posted above.
