I don't know if any of you have DSL service from Windstream, but I got to tell you that my experience with them is the worst I have ever encountered. I have been connected with them for two months..going on three now. I am supposed to be receiving 3mbps. I end up calling them two or three times a week because I am running at between 120Kbps and 700Kbps. Well, today it got so bad I had no connection at all for half an hour.
What do they say? Everything looks good on our side of it. No problems getting to your modem and the speeds are fine. So they make a trouble ticket. Send someone to check at either my house or at the switching station. Usually two days later. Of course, when they test, my speeds are fine. So they close the ticket and go away.
I have been waiting for the last 20 minutes for a speed test to finish. It's currently at 210Kbps.

All choices that I may have ultimately end up going back thru them.

    Rant not over!!!!!!

Sadly TimW my friend that is always the way, never do they act when the issue is live, when they turn up they say all is OK, duh course it is as they missed the boat!

Many dont like to blame their poor infastructure and lack of funding into it, the main issues it seems in the US and UK and maybe a few other countries is that the telecoms want to reap the profits from an overloaded network over investing to upgrade it, had to laugh this week as I watched a UK tech program that compaired the UK with Taiwan, UK main speed 2mb is average cost £15 a month, Taiwan average 1gb at £7 a month.. the Taiwan gov decided that they needed to go forward and invested.... our countries FAT ASSSSSes decide to have Pizza! go figure. (main cities, very rural areas its patchy in all countries)

So agree with your rant as the UK gov want everyone on 2mb at least...... DUH not going to cut it in the digital age they should be aiming at 1GB.

I'd just like to have the consistent speed that they promise me. And not just when everyone is at school or work. (Yes, they insist the lines are not over subscribed!! ...right!).

I would recommend Suddenlink cable if available in your area.
6MBs speed advertised and consistent 5.8 on SpeedTest.

I hear ya Tim, but that is still faster than me.... I am on a DUN, and NO DSL is available to me or any Hi-Speed... One of the drawbacks of living in the country..... I get anywhere between 21.6 kbps and 33.2 kbps and man, that is fast for us...

I would love to have access to hi=speed, but it just isn't available here..... So, I go with what I got....

Cable should be WAY better than what you stated.
    Barely better than dial-up.

Checkout the phones and wiring inside your property Tim.

I was getting clean speeds here of 2000-4000kbps on a line length of about 2km. Whenever as it got above 4200kbps, the line was so bad the router was working overtime correcting bad data blocks and the real throughput was almost zero, I had to reboot the router to fix it.

I did some methodical troubleshooting 6 days ago, removed one section of cable - since then it's been 6048kbps solid :).

The previous line I used was about 7.5km in length, speeds varied from 5kbps to 1200kbps. To get 1800-2000kbps (usually, still had a huge fluctuation), we switched the router to a 2Wire BT2700HGV, a very good router for long lines.

Not the lines. Sadly enough. That would be too easy. I swear it occurs most often when people are out of school or home from work. No static on the phone lines. The issue is sporatic but gives me wildly varying speeds. I can have 3.14Mbps and the next test will be 760Kbps. It may last for ten minutes, or like yesterday, over 8 hours. A modem reboot when I had absolutely no internet connection, got me back online but at a speed still of less than 1mbps. I gave up at 8pm. Today is Sunday. 10am and my speed is at 3Mbps.....I will wager you that when church lets out, my speed will be back in the toilet!

@hrlow......suddenlink is not available in my area. And as I stated, any other internet provider in my area still ends up going through windstream.

Yup.....1/3 of my normal speed now that church is out. Running just over 1mbps. :cry

Sounds like Windstream has a monopoly in the area.

I've just moved house and had the same problem wildly varying speeds,no fault on the line everything checked out at their end, turns out it was my fault I hadn't installed a DSL filter on every phone socket the simplest thing just slipped my mind.

    Best of luck Tim.

Done that Rikky...replace them. Issue persists. I am still convinced it is other users on the line. They keep telling me that other users would not account for the issue....yeah, right!
