My neighbor has a popup for WinFerno Power Registry Cleaner that keeps popping up on his screen showing better than 275 errors.
This is just after running CCleaner. I know this is just scareware and have tried removing through AbsoluteUninstaller. Doesn't show in the list.
A search of the files and documents gave me a trail to follow, so I went on a Search and Destroy mission.
Thought I got it all, but upon reboot, it was back.
Could it be reviving itself from the System Restore points?

    Hey Hrlow

As that app is a paid one then I would summise that its being a very aggressive registry cleaner and maybe hitting the HIVES that most others dont to say.. "look at me as I fonunt more so pay for me" personally stick with CCLeaner and you'll be ok or the user will.

Too many apps these days are scaring folk into buying what they dont need, cookies found as malware is a prime example in some apps.... cookies are a non issue... so as is some registry issues.

He bought this computer used and would like to see this program gone.
Have tracked as much as I could. Restore points is the only other place I can think of to try clearing it out. Will turn off System Restore then turn back on to clear all. Then create a new one IF this varmint is gone.
But why doesn't it show up in Add/Remove, AbsoluteUninstaller, or in All Programs?

hrlow2, Have you tried REVO? Try that, and see if it can find it. Once removed, you can always remove it, or put it in a file all it's own, like "tools" and put it in a "Unused desktop" for use later, just tell the guy NOT to mess with it. ;)

Have tried Revo in the past. Absolute does everything that Revo does and, for me anyway, easier to use.
    Looks more like Windows Add/Remove.

this app. is considered and classified to be malware according to this site which also includes the steps for manual removal, however they do recommend third party scanners like malwarebytes and windows defender, spywaredoctor to aid in the extrication process

    to pistol
MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware is what I use on any cleanups.
    Neither found anything about WinFerno.
Same with CCleaner. Cleared the registry until 0 issues were found.
Avira AntiVir also draws a blank.

man..that's a stubborn program, maybe the way to kill it off is to venture into the registry and %System% files route ? looks a little intimidating, but i cant find no other way to do it on the web...
    good luck to you though,
I'm sure you'll resolve it somehow.

hrlow2, did flushing the restore points change anything?

Might also check your Services list, see if anything pops up...

If not, I'm tending to agree with pistol: go ahead and do a registry backup, search for likely items that might be culprits, and if you don't want to take the big jump and edit your registry, try making a list of Inferno references and we can study them here...

Will try to do the Restore Point thing before I get any more drastic.

Haven't had access to the machine yet. This is an "in house" type of deed.

If the Restore Point flush doesn't do it, I'll try the regedit suggested by your link.
Have already looked for the WinFerno folder in Programs and in Programs(x86).
    Nonexistent in both.

    Copy 'in house'...

If the links don't pan out, got a feeling the RP flush might tell us something...another shot: run a HijackThis scan (if possible, do scans both with and without the WinFerno screen) - HJT is an awesome info tool: looks places other cleaners/scrubbers don't think about...

What do you recon, a genuine software that you are just having a hard time removing, or is this a rouge? If you can`t find a solution, may be there is something in msconfig that you can turn off? May be not the correct solution, but it might relieve the stress of seeing that popup.

Could be worth a shot, otherwise if you want to completely remove it, might be worth running MGTools for a more in depth look and thorough removal.

Now download Registry Search (see the link titled RegSearch Download Link)

    • Extract the files from Regsearch.zip into a folder.
    • Doubleclick regsearch.exe to start the program.
    • In the top 3 boxes under the Enter search strings case independen) and click Ok... option, enter the below string (use copy and paste)

    • Then click "OK".
    • Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file named RegSearch.txt will be saved in the program's folder as well).
    • Attach this RegSearch.txt file.

Guy would be happy if the screen just wouldn't pop up on him.
It is really more of an annoyance than a threat. He gets tired of Xing it off.
For myself, I'm just curious about the inability to find this mutha.
