I am having a problem when i turn on the computer and it starts booting up. It will get to the desktop and start loading everything but before everything is loaded it will saw an error message about wininet.dll. I close this and it just sits there. I have gone into safe mode to find out a little about this file and i have even tried to delete it but it will not let you because it says that windows is using it. I did found out that it has to do with connecting to the internet. I have dsl and am always connected. If it helps I am using windows ME. I have gone into safe mode and deleted my history and my cookies. I tried while in safe mode to do a system restore back before I had this problem. When i went to system restore it would not load cause when it started to load it popped up the error message saying that it had caused an error in wininet.dll. Just about any program you try to open it does this. Even when i start in safe mode and the help program tries to run that always starts in safe mode it will shut down because it says it has caused an error in this file also. About the only way I have found where i can actually open a program in safe mode is to search for the file and try to open it there. Even then sometimes the program does not open. What are some ways I can fix this other then reinstalling windows? If you need any more info let me know. Thanks

Boot the system with a Widows ME startup diskette (make one on the working system in Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk tab). At the A: prompt, enter SCANDISK C: to run the DOS version of ScanDisk for Windows ME. Have it do the full disk test, it make take some time to run.

It sounds like you might have some disk drive errors or corruption. ScanDisk ran from the boot diskette might be able to correct some of it, or at least tell you about it. It should not crash, but if it stalls for a long period on some areas, its a sign of disk errors.

Losing power (or switching the system power off while Windows is running) can cause disk read errors on some disk drives. Sometimes ScanDisk can correct these.

There could be one or more corrupted files on the disk drive that need to be replaced or repaired. There are also many different versions of WININET.DLL and if somehow a backlevel version is in the C:\Windows\System folder it could be causing problems. If you have all of the Windows ME updates installed on the system, the Wininet.DLL in \Windows\System should have a date of 02-06-2004. Compare what you have with what is on the working system.

If you can get the DOS version of SCANDISK to run OK, then the system might work a little better. You could try a Repair of IE, if you can reach the Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and select the IE 6 and Internet Tools line, use Add/Remove to get to the IE Repair option. That might clean up some of the damaged modules.

Thanks that fixed the problem. No problems out of that as of yet. There is one other problem that i am having that has been going on for the last week. I am getting a blue screen sometimes with this error.

    File Name:VXDMON(01)+00000701D
    Error:0E:0028:C005FE79

Any ideas on how I could fix this? It is starting to get a little annoying.

I think the first thing to do would be to look for it in your system ./..do a search ....when you find it start / run / msconfig / extract ....pull the file and then reboot ....it might be corrupt

Well now it will not even boot up in windows in normal mode. I am using a different computer now. I went and ran a scan disk again and the only way i can get it to start is in safe mode. Sometimes even then it will blue screen saying something about that it can not find some file. But when you do try to start in normal mode it will get all the way to windows ME screen and will just all of a sudden turn off on it own. Also sometimes it will get past the load screen and will just sit there. When i ran the scan disk it said there were no errors on my drive. Is it possible it could be something just as simple as the RAM? I went in to system restore just to see if it would help but it kept saying after ir restarted that it could not restore the system to the point i selected and i selected about every date available. I never had a chance to extract the file before all of this stuff started happening. What should i try now??????

    Have we tried this?
Boot while holding the CTRL key to enter the boot menu.

    2. Select the COMMAND PROMPT ONLY option and press enter.

    3. From the C:\> prompt, type SCANREG /RESTORE and press enter.

    4. When the restore screen appears, select a backup dated before this problem occurred and then restart the system. (A properly working registry has the word 'Started' next to the date)

May have to try scanreg /fix
