WinME & Windows Update Problem

A friend just bought a used Gateway. It came with the restore CD's which we used to format and reload WinME (yeah- I know ;) ). Anyway, after loading all the drivers, and setting IE to use the LAN card, we proceeded to go to Windows Update. The first update (IE6 SP1 update) downloaded and installed just fine. We rebooted and went to finish the updates. Now Windows Update is telling us that we're running a Mac and that no updates are available! I attached a zipped screenshot of the message. What I've posted here is EVERYTHING that we've done to the PC. No surfing, no downloads, nothing. This is formatted HD, new WinME install. MajorGeeks is the first (and only) non-Microsoft web site we've vistited. What the heck is going on here?!?!?

Thanks for the links. The microsoft link is dead :( And the other linked to a forum w/ a few ideas; one of them to disable AVG, but AVG isn' installed on this PC yet! I'll try the other suggestions from that forum and post the results..... Thanx again for the quick replies!

Funny they worked for me when I posted and worked again just now.
Site is a bit odd but all the knowledge base search seems to work.

I just tried your link again Studiot. It does go to a Microsoft page but it says "The Requested Page is not available". Attached is a screen shot. I'll try the link on a different PC just to see what happens. I'm using the ME PC right now for these posts.... I tried the suggestions in the cnet forums link and that didn't work either....

    thanx guys!

I note yours says Microsoft United States and mine says Microsoft United Kingdom

I always thought that we were behind the times, but this proves it.

Well, after trying everything I read and everything I can think of, I'm admitting defeat, for now. :banghead I'll attack it again later, and if I fix it, I'll post what I did in case someone else has the same problem....
I think it may be due to Microsoft's discontinuation of Win98/ME support....
    Thanx for your help guys!

Just for the record, I get the dead link page on my computer.

When I click on the link I clearly end up on a different site.

Microsoft clearly has some script which identifies where your browser is located and rederects accordingly. Who says BIG Brother is not watching you?

For those who might be interested, but totally off the point, there is a website dedicated to preserving the final free version of programs when they go commercial.
