google seems to hold no resuilts... do the geeks no better?

    Found a few things for ya;

Look here or here or maybe here . These didn't list the exact error that you got but they may help.

A cut and paste from the last link I gave you; Winmgmt is a service ... go to services and find this service and change its settings ... if it is stoped run it ... if it is running stop it ... hope this helps dude.U can also check ur event viewer to see what the system is telling about the problem.

Funny, I looked at Blackviper.com for this service under WinXP Home and didn't see it listed.

    hmm, how strange!

ive stuck it on manual now... perhaps that'll stop the errors slowing my boot...

  7. SwatShark

    SwatShark Captain Cuffs

Perhaps. Let me know if that works or not. Did you check the event viewer to see what's going on?

yep thats where that message came from :)

i hadnt noticed it was there until i looked at event viewr.

will report back when i restarted

is there any way to re-install all my hotfixes and service packs??

  12. SwatShark

    SwatShark Captain Cuffs

I don't think so, not without downloading them again.

  13. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

    hm i see..

I just think that some of them aren't installed properly or somthing...

Boot time is quicker, but still about 40 seconds...... but better than whataever it was before!

  14. SwatShark

    SwatShark Captain Cuffs

Are you sure this isn't caused by more than one thing? Taking that long to boot is just ridiculous, depending on your system specs anyway. Maybe you need to try a registry cleaner and check what runs at startup using msconfig. That's just too bloody long to wait for it to start up.

Maybe run Bootvis ( but remember if you disabled Task Scheduler in Services you will need to enable it again to successfully run Bootvis ) again!

You using a Nic? sometimes they slow boot times down.

  16. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

well.... ive run bootvis and it says i need to defrag the system manually, and therefore cannot optimise the system.

I find this rather odd..... im going to evaluate the software i have installed :)

  17. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

hm...... nothing seems to be running that might slow it down, ive disabled all un-nececary ports and uninstalled unncececary networking protocals, cleaned the registry, disabled real time file monitoring..... etc. etc. and still its slow... :(:(

  18. SwatShark

    SwatShark Captain Cuffs

Fish, what do you have running at startup? Get rid of everything that you don't need. It's possible there are lots of things in there eating up your resources. Although I would think those would begin to start up after you reach your desktop, but I'm not sure.

  19. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

    MsgPlus (i want this, definatley)
    sistray ( dunno)
    Smc (firewall)
    VetTray (AV tray icon thing)
WinWall Autostart (probably dont need this)

    Thats it.

Service wise..... im down to bare essentials..nothing i can do there

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Ah ok try this.... disable both the AV and Firewall from running at boot then reboot and see if it speeds up?

  21. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

    hmm, not really....

ive done a bootvis trace, and at first it looked like it was the network drivers, but that not it.... the thing that takes the MOST time is Logon + services........ hmmmmm

    do you have SP1 installed?

  23. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

yep.. came with it as OEM ....

  24. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Mmmm..... its just I remember their was a slowdown bug at startup where it would hang for 10-30secs before it would let you do anything until SP1 fixed it.

Not sure if this is possible in WinXP Pro, but you could try to turn off policies for your user, maybe it will speed up the login:

    http://www.jsiinc.com/subh/tip3500/rh3516.htm

Maybe also check if it helps to set the service Security Accounts Manager to automatic.

XP Home with SP1? There's your problem. Worst thing since ME.

Fish, I just thought about this. Do you have the hotfixes for the OS. Ya know, the ones you download from Windblows? I downloaded several of them once and they slowed my laptop down like crazy. I had to go back and uninstall them. Don't know if that's your problem, but if you have the hotfixes, it may be a place to look

hmmm, well when i go to uninstall them, it says that none of my programs will work properly :p is this microsoft just trying to make me keep them?

And yes, it is nearly as bad as ME, but i didnt have a choice in the matter... :(

That's Microsoft's standard "We don't want you to uninstall and stop using our product" message. Although there may be some merit to that message, I have never had any trouble using WinXP Pro after deleting the hot fixes. It's up to you fishy.

  32. SwatShark

Fishy, there's nothing wrong with WinXP and it is heads and tails above WinME. Truth be told, XP is merely an extention of Win2k anyway. Don't sweat it. If you want to try to delete the hot fixes then go ahead, or maybe you're willing to try a clean install?

I have no problem with XP Pro. It's Win2k with a few extra widgets. It's XP Home I have a problem with. XP Home was made by ripping out parts of XP Pro that the original designers assumed would be there. SP1 is a joke, since it has a slowdown bug that MS refuses to admit exists, let alone fix.

Then there's the whole activation/we-assume-you're-stealing thing. I plan on sticking with Win2k until Win2k3 workstation gets released.

He's right. Microsoft addressed this problem personally. Service Pack 1 has caused significant loss in performance in a lot of machines, and Microsoft looked into the matter and determined that a "bug" was the cause of this. They have a fix for it, visit microsoft's web site for more details and the fix.

Also... the fact that you've cut a lot of your services off may be a problem too, as many services have dependancies, which you should check on. If you shut a service off that has any dependancies, those dependancies will be unable to start as well... kind of dumb for me to mention this, because by the way you explained yourself, I'm sure you knew all about this to begin with.

  35. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

yep, i have checked my dependancies...... that original error was from somthing completley random which i THOUGHT i had disabled, but obviously not!

I do have a windows 2k CD around here somewhere, and truth be told i do prefer win2k but I like the convinince of XP, but more to the point, im not in the mood to back up everything to CD and then find i dont have half of my install disks and also my parents dont want me to screw this computer up, so they wont let me do anything too drastic to it, and they'll probably think reformat is a bit drastic.

(shh.....dont tell anyone but i have the winxp pro *cough*corp*cough* edition, but id rather not do it the dodgey way!)

Well... as a tip, if you do decide to format, you can download Microsoft updates, critical or otherwise, to your hard drive and burn them on a CD from there... I don't know why Microsoft tries to hide the fact that you can do this, because I've formatted quite a few times and have had to download the updates all over again, which isn't a fun task on a 56k. At the windows update site, there's a link either on the left or at the top that says "Customize Windows Update". If you go there, you can find the options to make options appear to download the updates directly to hard drive instead of having them install immediately after you've downloaded them... which is installing it from the site... the setup files never reach your hard drive... they just install. Microsoft pisses me off...

Also... like I said... there IS a bug with service pack 1... they've evidently admitted it since whenever it was the first problems started to arise, and there is an available fix for it... I suggest you take a look on Microsuck's web site... see what you can find.

  37. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

    personalise :)
    Display the update catalog........

i got a link to basically this but it doesnt work for me for some strange reason..... oh well no big.,

Incidentally ive removed all my hotfizes and shiz so i can go thru and download the ones i NEED rather than just all of them.

  38. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

    gor blimey!!!

getting rid of unnececary updates really sped my machine up!!!! A LOT.

I actually red the descriptions for each one i downloaded, and only got the ones i really needed, like big security exploits etc. etc.

    Boot is now 25 seconds :D : D :D

still a bit slow though, dont you think?

  39. SwatShark

    SwatShark Captain Cuffs

Maybe a tad. Keep in mind your system specs have a good deal to do with that as well, but that's certainly a good bit faster than the 35-40 seconds that you reported to begin with. Try Bootvis to see if that helps. Don't forget to clean the registry then defrag first tho.

  40. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

cleaned the registry many a time now, and defragged last night, all seems to be okay....

Slowed down a bit more since i re-installed firewall......

Okay so whats the most efficient firewall about? Sygate is very good for security, but i would prefer somthing thats fast than very secure, its not like im a web server or anything..

    Kerio

Hey Goldy glad your system has gained a few more horsepower ;)

As for windows update... sometimes the WU class ActiveX file needs deleting and renewing ( that part when MS ask you to say yes to the security notice ) plus some firewalls can inhibit WU.

  42. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

    got it ;)

i used kerio a while back, but had problems configuring it for internal network stuff. I might give it a try again now :)
