WinMX no more?

Discussion in 'Software' started by Can't come up with any, Sep 22, 2005.

  1. Looks like WinMX has gone bye! bye! Nothing official, but there web site seems down.
Anybody have suggestions for replacing it?

Shareaza or Bit Torrent. Azureus is about the best BT client.

(That's a shame, I've been using it for years)

Yep,Winmx ain't working here either. So damn used to it.Tried Azureus and couldn't make head nor tail of it (or just too lazy to work it out) so uninstalled.

Funny thing is Zone Alarm warns constantly that something still trying to access port udp 6881 from many different locations. Not good.Luckily I made a ghost image prior to Executing Az.

Port 6881 is the default Bit Torrent port.

BTW, Shareaza can handle torrent files if you don't like any of the "usual" clients.

Another benefit of Shareaza is that it uses more than one network, so it contains a lot of files.

I've used LimeWire for years. When you're looking for naughty ;) videos, it's pretty easy to tell when a video is bogus, just from looking at the screen: the file size for differently named files are always the same. Aside from nasty vids, you're pretty safe, but like with any p2p network, anything you download and run you do so at your own risk.

Some versions of LimeWire are loaded with spyware.

LimeWire Pro isn't, but it's also not free.

I don't really see the point in using it when there are far better programs available.

i am not a computer hacker, or coder or anything, but i didnt think you could put a virus into movies. music is what i used it for, and like 3 outta 5 songs wouldnt play in winamp, so i opened them in windows media player, and my antivirus picked up a virus. ifsofacto, i use ares only. shareze or what ever is ok i suppose, but i like ares the best. the only thing i dont like about ares is that it takes a while to connect to the network no matter what internet speed you have.

Reset my router. No more probes to port 6881.

  12. For those of you who just won't take NO! for an answer. People have united to save WinMX. Hope this doesn't get me in trouble with MG.
