WinSock issues??

I'm trying to fix the Mother In Law's computer. She scanned using Avast (which I installed for her 3 weeks ago), found some files that were infected, removed them (she doesn't know what they were). After removal and re-start the system was asking for wsock32.dll file in the system folder. I've since just added that file to the system folder, and now have the following error:

WINIPCFG.EXE file is linked to missing export WSOCK32.DLL:1001.

I searched through the forums and found info on LSPFix, but am not 100% sure this is the right thing to do. I also read info at http://cexx.org/winsock.htm, but since I am far from an expert, I have shyed away from editing the registry.

Is it time to reload windows? Or do I have another option?

thanks - and happy thanksgiving for those celebrating today!

Win98. Not sure about updates. I got no-where thanksgiving evening, and had to leave the in-laws. I'm thinking about asking them to buy XP and upgrading that machine. too radical?

    Emily,

I tried to catch you the other night before you got off. Call and tell them to run the LSPFix, get it here: http://majorgeeks.com/download4180.html

See what happens with that first.

Answer the post.... don't refer to isp. Do you know how to reinstall your modem driver?

If yes. Tell him / her the procedure......don't sluff it off. That's all.
