I downloaded WinsockXPfix.exe to a CD but when I tried to install I was told
"not a valid Win 32 app". My drivers are 32 bit. Is this a 64 bit program? Is there a 32 bit version? Any suggestions?

    Hi

No its a 32bit app, try downloading again and if you are using a download manager then dont use it to download the file and if you are using an alternate browser then IE then use IE and vice versa.

Or try copying the file off the CD to the desktop of the PC and run it from there.

I did D/l again and saved in my Docs but had the same result. What is a D/L mgr? I also didn't follow the "alt browser then IE-----" thing. Step by step is better for me.
    Thanks for input.

    D/L is a Download Manager
alt browser means something like Firefox, Google Chrome or Opera.

I am still not sure where to go from here?

    Thanks again for ideas.

The alternative browser suggestion means, if you are using Internet Explorer to download the file, try downloading the file with a different browser (such as Firefox, etc.), as the download seems to not be downloading properly on your end somehow.

I am reluctant to D/L another browser since my pc seems to be having enough probs with IE. For instance it will drop me out of whatever site I am on and return me to my ISP(Juno) sign in. I am ashamed :( to admit I still have dial up. I don't know if this makes a difference.

    Thanks---JoeU

    Hello,
You said you downloaded Winsock fix to a CD and then tried to install it. You downloaded again and had the same results. Does that mean that you tried to run it again from a CD? Are you trying to run this program on another computer? Do you still have the original file that you downloaded and then copied to the CD? If you do, compare the two using this program. First select Create Checksum and browse to your original file. Then after is finds the checksum select verify and browse to the file on the CD. The file on the CD may have been corrupted when burned. If both files have the same MD5, then there is some other issue.

Also, if the computer you are trying to run Winsock fix has XP SP2 or later, you can repair Winsock using the netsh command from within Windows.

I was just trying to follow advice of DavidGP but maybe I got it wrong.

How do I " using the netsh command from within Windows. " I do have SP3.

    Joe Thanks

Because you said it was on the advise of David, I would wait for David to confirm if this would be appropriate for you.

In an admin account Start>Run then:

    netsh winsock reset catalog

You may have to reinstall your antivirus or third party firewall software after this.

I forgot to add an extra step. Sorry.

    Start>Run>CMD

    Then:

    netsh winsock reset catalog

    Hi

Indeed if you cannot get the winsockfix to work for any reason, for one it could still be malware infection, but I would try the netsh winsock reset catalog command that tgell posted as it will do the same thing, its just that the winsockfix.exe is a simpler way for many to achieve this opposed to using command line instructions.

I would also be tempted as an LSP (Layered Service Provider) could be malformed and corrupt, could be one of those things but could also be a consequence of malware so worth following the below.
