Is there a replacement/equivalent for the old 'wintop' utility that was part of kernal toys, which I found so useful in W98? I can find no equivalent for w2k/xp.

Well, wintop from the kernal toys kit from MS was the one that did it for me.
UNfortunately, it stooped working with W98.

I checked out tweakXP, nothing that seems from tthe descriptions to replace what I had. Thanks for the ptr, though.

What I REALLY need to do is find out why a process called svchost occasionally/reliably starts sucking up al the CPU cycles.
I'll just be reading news and checking mail, and all of a sudden the system will slow to the point that you can watch individual scan lines being drawn on the screen (this is on a Barton/2600).
In addition, the system will occasionally generate a po-up screen that says svchost has caused an error and must be restarted.
BTW, this is with w2k/p and the error occurs typically while using firefox 0.92 and eudora 6.1.2, all under earthlink.
