WinXP Crashing, conflict with TrendMicro (?)

    Hi,

    Firstly, my system:

    HP Media Center desktop m7470n
    Windows XP SP3 version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.120821-1629)
    AMD Athlon x64 X2 Dual Core 4200+

I am going to do my best to describe this problem, but I have been unable to diagnose a specific cause and I am really hoping someone can help me. This is an older PC, but has been reformatted and contains very little software. In the past few months I have had this issue where the computer 'freezes' unexplainably. I say this, as it ceases to respond, to keyobard or reset buttons, and the monitor goes blue with vertical lines (not the so-called BSOD). I could use it hours with no problem, but then sometimes I have to do a hard reset 3-4 times within a couple minutes to get it running. I thought that it initially might have just been a video card or physical problem with the monitor/connection.

Anyways, all that changed recently, and now I am having this occur regularly. I cannot say for certain, but I believe it to be linked to TrendMicro. I was constantly running TrendMicro Platinum Security 2012. Two days ago, it inexplicably stopped working, in that Windows no longer detected antivirus protection, it would not load properly, and continuously would 'hang' when applying an update. As a result, I removed the software and installed a new version of TrendMicro Platinum Security 2013. That is where the problems really escalated. I am unable to complete any further installations of TM. When at the end, the blue screen freezing will always occur. Then I cannot ever uninstall successfully either, same unresponsiveness and blue screen. I have done two System Restores to prior points, one with the earlier TM 2012, and one with nothing, and still the problem occurs. When TM is installed, I can only boot in safe mode, as any other thing leads to the freezing when TM protection is loading.

IN terms of what I can tell, I have also noticed problems with JAVA (jscript errors popping up frequently) and .Net Framework. Both of these are visible on the event log, but neither conflict occurs when the 'blue screen' happens. I have removed Java and verified the .Net Frameworks (1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5) using .NET FRAMEWORK SETUP VERIFICATION TOOL, and neither has helped. The computer will now boot, as I have restored to a pre-TM 2013 (post 2012) point but I still think it is not fixed, and of course can't reinstall the antivirus. And I have also run MalwareBytes for what that is worth and turned up nothing.

This computer is essential to me, and I would like to get it running properly right away (typing up a PhD thesis!). If anyone can help, please let me know.

    Additional info:

    .Net Error
.NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) - Service reached limit of transient errors. Will shut down. Last error returned from Service Manager: 0x80029c4a.

The windows is a genuine copy, obtained through academic license.

Obviously I would like to continue to use my TM 2013 subscription for protection, if possible.

    Help? :booger

Hi falconattack. Thanks for your help (and the welcome). I am really happy someone is reading this as I have not received any help otherwise and the issue is ongoing.

My problem is not with the removal though, the uninstall utility seems to work just fine from TrendMicro, however I cannot reinstall it (fully) without a crash.

As I said, I do not know for certain that this issue is caused by it (that is TrendMicro), only a symptom of whatever is going wrong. I am still having the problem occur without the antivirus installed, but at least I can boot up my system.

I would like to diagnose what the actual error is and go about fixing it. Something is clearly corrupted or conflicting in my system/software/drivers. Or else it is a hardware issue, which again, at this point I am just unsure of. I just don't know what it is, and have tried what I could think of already.

I have 2 GB of RAM installed currently. I really don't think it is a problem with processing speed though. Operations run fine, and I am really only focused on word processing for the moment.

As an update, I have fully removed and reinstalled all versions of the .NET Framework, and this has [at least] removed the error message I could find in the event viewer.

I just wanted to re-iterate that I don't think TrendMicro is necessarily the problem, only one symptom of a worse issue. I cannot run install it properly, which I don't think is the software issue. I can rename the thread, but for now I would just like help to diagnose the issue.

I have had further changes now. Although upon boot-up I do see the 'Welcome' screen, there is no longer any user accounts shown (it is only all blue with the word "welcome" whereas before I had to click on my user ID to complete the log-on. Now, there is clearly something wrong, because the user ID screen is not by-passed, however, there is no choice or use interface at this screen.

Just today I have also noticed that black dialog boxes are appearing in my upper left corner, but just flashing on instantly, too quick to make anything out. This might be related to Windows updates, but I have not seen it occur before.

Thanks. I have seen many other have had this issue, though the causes and solutions offered are all different. At any rate, my user accounts are there and active (appear to be enabled and have full admin privileges), and I don't think I need to edit the registry. I just don't understand why it would change all of a sudden, and if it is due to the other issues I have been having. Some things seem to point to this being a sign of a serious problem.

Anyways, it is not a problem to have it either way, just trying to give as much information as possible when I notice a change. As is, I have the welcome screen enabled, however since it is only this one user account it just proceeds to log in, which was never the case before. If other accounts were disabled, e.g. Guest, but some update then it is unusual as I don't know the cause, but not detrimental.
