Hi, I am a long time reader, first time poster. Usually I can solve most of my problems by reading other threads, but recently my system has begun freezing every time I try to shut down or restart on the screen that says " windows is shutting down." I had run a few anti-malware programs between the time it was running fine and the time is first froze. The only program that I ran that I had never used before was CCleanup, so I think that might be part of the problem. Here are my specs:

    Windows XP Home SP2
    MSI MS-6507E Motherboard
    Pentium 4 2.27GB
    768 MB DDR RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 6200 (128MB)

If you need any more info, please let me know. Thank you in advance for helping me with this annoyance.

Try this ...control panel / user accounts / change the way users log on and off / clear the box for fast switching ....then see if that works.

I still have the same problem. Another thing I wanted to add was that I saw a recommendation to update nvidia drivers when having this problem, so I have already tried that. Thanks for your help. Any other suggestions?

    Check these values:
    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
    Click on the "Control" Folder.
    Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it a value lower than 2000

HKEY_Current_User\Control Panel\Desktop and look for AutoEndTasks. Default is "0". Set this value to "1".

    One other thing:
also in control panel, sounds disable all sounds or just the shutdown tune, sometimes a corrupt soundfile can hang shutdown

I have been unable to use your information because my pc now freezes when I boot up. It asks me if i want to start up in safe mode since i doesnt not shut down properly. when i choose safe mode, it freezes with a black screen full of "multi(0)disk....." lines. when i try to boot in normal mode, the screen turns completely black after the windows loading screen. Is this a hardware problem? or do you have any pointers for me to fix this? Thank you.

Can you boot into the bios? If so, check temps and voltages .....see if it stays up for at least 30 minutes. Report what you find.

well, it booted up in safe mode this time after about 4 failed attempts. It asks me if i want a system restore, so I am wondering if that is a good idea at this point, because last week I was having no probems at all. I will still get to the bios specs for you. Is there a way to get into the bios from windows, or only during startup? And do you recommend system restore?

System restore may be your best bet ......then a thorough virus scan ...bios can only be accessed at start up ...not thru windows. Still want to know system temps and voltages, when you can ......

okay, system temperature is 35C = 95F. CPU temp is 46/114. Both temps are gradually increasing. How long does my pc need to be running to get an accurate reading? The fan voltage ranges from 8 to 11V. Is this the correct information?

Would also like the main rail voltages as well as any other you can report ....voltages should not be +/- 5%. (IE: 12 volt should not be +/- .60 volts).

What does this do? Mine's at 20000 and less than 2000 seems like a big change.

How do you disable just one sound? I haven't gotten some of these sounds in a long time.

stupid question, but how long are you actually waiting for your computer to shutdown, or boot into safemode. if there is a problem, it may seem that it's taking a long time, but may still boot up (or shut down)

sorry for the delay. I cant find the main rail voltages in my BIOS, but the CPU temp is 132F and the System temp is 118F. Can you help me find voltages?
