hi i had a power outage the other day (yes i have a surge protector, and had never had any problems befor from power outtages, also it wasnt even raining so i dont know why it browned out) anyways when it went to start windows up it asked me how i wanted to start it (normally, safe mode, safe mode with network, and last good known startup (or something like that, i got the computer torn down right now, till i get this computer up and running how i want it))
then no matter what i pick a blue screen pops up for what has to be less than a half second, and the computer reboots?
    any suggestions
should have the problem computer set up to try stuff by the time someone replies to this

    thanx in advance:)

Can you get into your BIOS? Try pressing the "Delete" key right at the intial boot-up. In the BIOS possibly under "Advanced BIOS Features look for an option that says Quick Boot and make sure this is disabled, save and exit BIOS. On the reboot your system should perform the memory scan. Has this occureed and where there any error messages. This will coarsely explore whether there is bad memory.

Post back and we will see what we can do.

    sorry,
should have put this in earlier.
    already tried that, no errors
also i put an old hard drive in i had laying around that had windows ME on it
it will boot up fine if i tell it to use that hard drive?
but because its windows ME it wont read the other hard drive.

Can you hit F8 right before windows starts up, to select the option to disable automatic restart, so we can troubleshoot the BSOD (Blue screen of death)? Without the CD, it is quite tough to troubleshoot this one.

Which is why I do not understand that OEMs do not automatically install the recovery console option.

Anyone can automatically install this, via the run command : winnt32 /cmdcons <--- this will install the recovery console.....

Yes you can use another XP CD if you are only using the "Recovery Console" for salvaging purposes but I wouldn't do any reinstalls etc with it (unless you know how).

Try using system restore to put your computer back to a date before the problem. Sounds like the registry.
