I'm on a PC here that when booted to XP Pro, it asks to press "ctrl + alt + del" to login, then prompts for a passwoprd for the user "administrator" even though there isn't any password set. How do I get rid of all that :crap and just have it load right to the desktop?

    Thanks.

(I know I've done this same thing before, but I don't remember how, and don't really have the time to run around Googling it LOL )

You might have to look at the advanced tab in Control Userpasswords2 besides the basics in Novice's link.

I was able to get rid of the "ctrl + alt + del" prompt, but it still prompts for a password. I just click "OK" and it goes right to the desktop.... not a big deal really, just a slight annoyance more than anything.

Might be as simple as Control Panel User Accounts, Change the way users log... tweakui has a setting change for that, as well as showing Administrator on start screen for XP Pro.

Yeah- I checked that out and what we'd consider the 'normal' User Account manager didn't come up.... I attached a screen shot of the User Acct manager....
    :confused

That's odd your missing the box for "users must use a password" in userpasswords2.

Have you rebooted after unchecking the special security option from the advanced tab?

Yup. I've rebooted a couple times for good measure. If I click Start > Run and type control userpasswords2 I get the same window as if I go to Control Panel > User Accounts. Strange. :confused

It isn't my PC and the dude who owns it said it's not a big deal, but I hate admitting defeat, especially on something that should be fairly simple and straightforward.

I know you don't want to spend much time with this but I do notice there is no ASPNET account which is related to .NET 1.1

Is DOTNET 1.1 installed? Maybe reinstalling or recreating the ASPNET account (scroll to bottom of article)?

Probably not worth troubleshooting if the dude doesn't care.

There is no .NET Framework of any type... no 1.1 or 2.0. I find this kind of surprising that there's no .NET Framework at all. I might just install it 'cuz so many other apps require it these days.... whudduyathink?

I don't see why not unless it is a very small HD. I've never had an issue on installing .NET.

I can't believe someone could get away with no .NET these days unless he uses very little new software.

It would probably rectify the login screens. .NET 1.1 is very small--why not try that one see if it makes the login screen more normal and if all goes well add 2.0

Well, I installed .NET Framework 2.0 and it made no difference to anything anywhere. :banghead I'm gonna call it a night on this PC and take a fresh look Monday in the AM. Maybe something obvious will seep into my consciousness 'twixt now and then ;)

Type CONTROL USERPASSWORDS in run [note there is no "2"] see if you get the normal Control Panel>User Accounts screen. If you switch to use the Welcome Screen does it still ask for password?

I didn't get a chance to try it w/o the "2". I never did get a 'normal' Welcome screen. Another thing that I believe is related, is when I hit ctrl+alt+del the desktop closes and a window comes up with a bunch of different options like "shut down" and "log off" and "change password" and "task manager" and a couple others that I don't remember. I've seen this same thing before dozens of times usually on PCs in an office or network environment.
