WINXP Programs Vanish

    About 10 seconds after appearing, Internet Explorer completely vanishes from the screen, taskbar, and task manager. Updated full virus and spybot scans are ok. Some other prograns also disappear, although many ( including Mozilla )run without problems. A few others will not even load the home screen. I have replaced shell.dll in my WINXP Pro system.with no change. I've been battling this situation for over a week so any ideas are welcomed even if you are not sure of them. I do NOT want to reinstall or repair install WINXP.
