my winxp started rebooting by itself frequently and unexpectedly a few days ago. no new MS updates that i can see and nothing has changed. I do have a couple of troj viruses (troj_ircflood.o, etc) but cant keep the system on long enough to run my virus tools and clean them. my initial research says it could be device drivers, outdated bios or hardware conflict. device drivers have all been updated, can't find any hardware conflicts... although... I have had problems with the pc freezing when I try to use too many USB devices. as for bios... gigabyte motherboard (Award bios) is about 4 yrs old and sure don't want to tackle an update if not necessary.

Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

More likely the malware ....try to do an online scan:
Bitdefender agree to the license and then select Scan. DO NOT CHANGE THE OPTIONS TO SHOW ALL FILES SCANNED. That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files. Once Bitdefender completes the scan:

Click-on the Detected Problems tab. Then select Click here to export the scan report

When the window comes up to save the report, change the Save as type: box to Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) and then in the File name box enter change to bdscan then click save. This will save a file named bdscan.txt in whatever folder you are currently in when you save the file (take notice of where you are at so you can find it later). This bdcan.txt file will actually contain HTML code that we can easily view later while reviewing your log. All we have to do is rename the file to bdscan.html.

It sounds like you have set it to BSOD and have gotten error codes ....could you post them?

Do the scan in safe mode with networking if you think it is a driver issue...

    And welcome to MG's

well I think you figured it out yourself. It has to be the malware. But to be optimistic we should examine the hardware conflict. From what you posted to the shoutbox the problem occures when you do back up. Or is it just that you try to save as many files as possible? Can you post the system specs?
Edit:just saw Tim's post. Listen to him. He knows better:)

Will give the BitDefender a try if I can keep the PC running long enough to get it loaded and do a scan. Have a lot of tools (CCleaner, Adaware, SpyBot, AVG, HiJackThis, and various others) but problem is I can't keep the Pc running long enough for them to do their job .. even in safe mode.

will post back after I give it a try.

    btw... what is BSOD?

Right click my computer / advanced / start up and recovery / uncheck the restart on errors ......nest time it crashes you will get a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) ...give us the full error code.:)

that was the first thing I did. however, the pc still reboots even tho the auto restart is now disable. I have located a nasty trojan in my sys32 file that i think may be the problem. each time bitdefender (or AVG) reaches the file it shuts the pc down and reboots. everything moves so quickly i can't identify the exact file so i continue to try to run various AV programs hoping one of them will tackle the beast. any feedback you have is appreciated.

thank goodness for dual boots! after a little work I was able to boot from the alt partition and run my virus programs on the corrupted system. it seems to have done the trick! turns out.. it was a nasty trojan virus hiding in my system files. without the dual boot capability i would have had to do a clean boot and troubleshoot from there or, worst case, try to repair winxp from the cd. Anyway, all is well. Thanks to all for your feedback!
