WinXP SP3?!?!

A few days back, Windows XP Service Pack 3 was on the MajorGeeks front page (here's the link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Microsoft_Windows_XP_Service_Pack_3_d4323.html). I'm just looking for some input here. I'm running XP Pro SP2 with the updates as of 2 or 3 weeks ago installed. Do I need SP3? What about software issues? I remember when SP2 first came out (years ago) and the trouble that followed. I remember telling people to not install SP2 for a month or two until the bugs were worked out (and they're STILL working the bugs out ;) ). Is SP3 going to be the same nightmare that SP2 was? Any input is appreciated, especially if you've installed it and any problems (or lack of problems) you've experienced. Thanks.

I never saw any major bugs introduced with SP2, and I ran it since release. The SP2 of today is the same SP2 that was originally released.

At any rate, SP3 is still in its beta stages, and is only a public release candidate.

I wish I had a good answer for this. All I can say is that for the last few days MS keeps trying to update me on auto for SP3, but for some reason it keeps saying it wasn't possible to install it (I run Win xp SP2)

I've been running the beta for a couple of months and the RC1 now and I've had no issues as of yet, there's not much extra for normal users in there. The thing I like is that it includes all the SP2+ updates in case I have to repair or reformat. MS really should have made a rollup a couple of years ago.:confused

Do you have a screenshot of your AutoUpdates listing XP SP3 as a download? I just be curious as its not suppost to be listing, unless you have found a reg hack ( yes one snook out onto the net, some bad tester leaked it ) to allow XP SP3 to install via AutoUpdates, which was listed for testers to use in prep for this route as part of a beta test senario.

If it is listing on its own I do know some folk at MS who would be interested in seeing your update log.

@dlb ~ there will always be bugs with any update, as there is no way to account for all PC setups. Main issue with SP2 for XP was the folk infestated with Malware or having hooky copies in the main.

Best option when installing the RTM of SP3 will be to do a full backup of a PC, then install, if it breaks, recover to the backup.

I do know that many of the folk in the closed test on SP3 have reported good sucess with SP3 as it doesnt add many new items to break, most are updates to already installed files.

I don't have a screen shot. Next time this happens though I will pay closer attention. What keeps happening is that in the icon tray there is the message that there are updates to install. I click on install and then end up with the message saying SP3 couldn't be installed.

I downloaded sp3 a couple weeks ago and have had no issues with the computer, software or any games. If anything my desktop seems alittle more peppy. I made sure to do a full back up on another harddrive just in case though.

No worries, just curious at this, if you have not used a leeked registry hack to get XP SP3 RC, then somethings amiss with AutoUpdates, if you find time and are happy to do this could you search your Updates Log for "SP3" and see if it mentions XP Service Pack 3?

to do this Click Start > Run >type %systemroot%\windowsupdate.log > OK

This opens the Update Log in Notepad, then click Edit > Find and type Service Pack

then see if anything is found relating to XP Service Pack 3, copy and paste a large-ish block of text into a notepad file and attach to another post ( may not be able to do the full log as its too large generally to attach )

You dont have Office XP installed do you?

I believe that you will find that the SP3 you are seeing is actually the Excell Viewer 2003 Service Pack 3 update.

Likely there will not be any as this SP is just a stability release, with a few added network tools and updated WiFi.

XP in its SP2 state is what I would consider as Microsofts best OS to date, pretty well robust and quick, so to me why fix whats not broken and thats what MS decided.

I'm not having any luck installing sp3

    There's a error message:
Service Pack 3 e:\blahblahblahverylongdirectory\i386\update\update.inf file is not correct

Any idea what that is? Is it possible that it has something to do with the fact that I have Vista Transformation Pack, or that I just had something go wrong with the download?
