    Hi,

First of all, this is a great site!! I had no idea there was something called spyware and my whole system was totally screwed up!! Read the articles and posts on spyware and have finally cleaned it up. Great advice with easy to follow isntructions!!

Getting to my query - I use Windows 98se - and after cleaning it of spyware and viruses I find that 2 files are missing - one of which is WinZip. I searched cnet for freeware versions of Winzip and it threw up Zipreader 8.0. Any idea if this software is compatible with windows 98? Does it function the same way or am I looking at more trouble

I also have a dump of Win 09 on my hard drive. Would I be able to find WinZip there??

Thanx in advance for the help

Yes Zipreader 8.0 will work with win98 and should work similar to WinZip.

another program to look at that is also free is 7-Zip http://www.7-zip.org/ as this will also un-zip downloaded files plus you can also zip files up yourself unlike Zip Reader which only un-zips.

I don't know what you mean by dump of Win 09?

Thanks Halo, will probably go for your suggestion.

Sorry , what I meant to say was that I have a folder on my hard drive called Win98 (typo in my original mail) which I presume has the same info as the CD - thats why I called it a dump - but not sure what the subfolders hold so am extremely wary of opening files here.

    Thanks again

ah I see... that will most likely be your Win98 operating system files and you won't find Winzip there as Winzip is not a part of Windows, if you have a folder where all your internet downloads go and you initially downloaded Winzip then you may find the setup file for Winzip there.

Downloaded 7-zip but something seems to be wrong coz when I try to open any previously zipped files i get the error message

    Windows cannot find winzip32.exe
This program is needed for opening files of type WinZip files.

Does this mean I have to use only Winzip???

You can always go to olderversions.com and download one of the earlier versions of WinZip. It will operate in the demo mode and have the constant nag screens, but will continue working. :)

You would need to change the files default opening program, but before doing that Novices suggestion is a goodun :)

didnt find anything at olderversions.com but along those lines here is another site will basically all the versions of Winzip available.

    http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=winzip

if you want to change the program that certain files are opened with ....

    1) go to the file you are trying to open
    2) single left click the file to select it, then hold shift and Right click the file.
    3) in the menu you should see "Open With" click that.
    4) in that window locate your new zip program 7-zip and select it.
    5) check the box that says "always use this program to open this type of file"
    6) click ok and then all files of that type will be opened with 7-zip

    hope this helps :)
