Wired vs. Wireless

I've been using a Netgear router for about a year with no problems. Recently I moved into an apartment which will be shared with my soon 2b wife. Anyway, she uses a laptop and thus needs to use her wireless router. I hooked up the wireless router, but performance is about half of what it is without a router installed on my desktop. The wireless router is a Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless Router. I had been downloading at about 300 kb/s, but that is cut in half with this one. I am assuming it is the 54MBps vs the 100Mbps of my previous wired router. Is there anyway to get more speed for my wired desktop from this router or will I need to purchase another one?

Can I hook my wired router to the incoming cable and my computer and then hook the wireless router to the wired router and have that work?

Although the wireless router is in fact slower it shouldn't cause your net to slow down since the net connection itself is slower then 54Mbps anyways.

Although if you want you can do as you suggested below. Plug the wired router into the modem, set it up as you did before. Then simply connect the wireless router to the wired router as though the wired router was the modem. Once that is done the only setting you should really change is to disable DHCP on the wireless router. That way the wired router will handle all the IP's. If you don't disable DHCP on the wireless router what happens is the wireless router recieves an IP and then your wife recieves another IP from there. Rather then just being assigned on directly. SO it should work either way, it's just better if you assign all the IP's from one spot.
