Im trying to run a wired wireless router to my upstairs room, so I can have continuous coverage, on the same wireless network.

Heres the situation. In my basement I have my main PC, which is connected to my FiOS Quantum router via ethernet, along with my XBox One. Its a wireless router, but being that its in the basement, the connection is spotty at best on the 2nd floor of my house, and somewhat annoyingly slow on the 1st floor.

I ran CAT6 cable all day yesterday up to the 2nd floor, in preparation for connecting my Netgear WNDR3400 to act as an access point. The problem I cam across, is that when connected to the CAT6 I ran to the basement, and then to a laptop to play around with the router preferences, I couldnt get internet connection.

I connected the CAT6 to my FiOS Blade (the router looks like a blade, and so thats what I call it, I think its the G1100, this is the link to the router itself from FiOS http://www.verizon.com/support/resi...king/fios-quantum-gateway/troubleshooting.htm ) and connected it to the internet port on my Netgear (the input ethernet port) and then connected my laptop to one of the 4 ethernet out ports. I was able to get into the router settings via 192.168.1.1 and look around. But I was completely unable to connect to the internet this way, prior to changing anything, on either router. Both were at stock configuration. I couldnt even connect to the internet when I tried connecting to the wireless signal coming from the Netgear.

I did some googling, and found that I had to set the WNDR3400 as an AP, and I did so, as well as set a range of IP addresses that my FiOS blade wouldnt use (I set my FiOS to run a range from 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.10, and my Netgear to use 192.168.1.100 - 192.1.200) but was still unable to connect to the internet through the Netgear.

I know the CAT6 cable is wired properly, because I have no problems getting online with it when I connect it directly to my XBox 360, without going through the Netgear. So I know the CAT6 works fine.

My question is, where did I go wrong? Those settings I previously mentioned. I have since restored both the FiOS router, and my Netgear back to stock, in preparation of getting some help and attempting to have this properly running.

My end goal is to have the same SSID, so that when I move from my basement to the first floor, to the second floor, with my laptop, I wont have to choose a separate wireless network to connect to, and it will just pick up the same network name and just go from the weaker signal to the stronger signal, while maintaining the same name, and security settings.

The WNDR3400 is dual band, as well as the FiOS Blade router, so they are very similar. I know that the connection speed coming from the Netgear wont be nearly as fast as coming directly from the FiOS Blade, but it will be fast enough for me, as well as much more consistent, and stable.

The wifi on the new FiOS router is just terrible. The old actiontec I had, had such a stronger wifi signal on the 2nd floor, and I sort of regret the upgrade to Quantum, only for this reason. Everything else with Quantum is great, its just the wifi thats kind of crap.

I had this problem but didn't want to mess around with cables and wiring so sought advice and bought a Netcomm WP206 EOP kit.
It was relatively cheap and does the job wonderfully. The main unit is plugged into the modem/router and the secondary unit at the other end of the house. I can now get wifi anywhere on my property.
You may have already tried this but if not I can recommend it. There are other brands available but I have had no problems with mine.
