wireless asking for a beating

hey guys, my stupid wirelss is just geting on my nervs now. I have a linksys wireless g router, and i have 2 linksys wireless g cards in both of my computers. I have the router in the middle floor, center of the house, (small 3 story town house). My dads computer is in the basement, and my computer is in my room upstairs. My dad gets a full 54 meg connection with no lagg what so ever. His signal strength is also very high. (full at most times). Now on my computer, it says i am getting full signal strength and a 54 meg conection, but i get squat. It feels like i am back on my 56 k, er even worse, 16k. My connection speeds drop down to l ike 1 mb which is like a 16k modem. I tried not using WEP encryption and it dones't matter. I get a good connection for a little bit of time, then it stars to slow down very fast, then it disconnets me. Then i have to reconnect over again and etc. I really dont know what to do. Any tips?

 

I´m not proficient enough to give you a definitive answer yet, but logic would tell me that it´s gotta be either a setting on the computer, or something to do with the signal not penetrating various surfaces. I suspect its the latter... so:

1. Try temporarily moving your pc to perhaps next to your dad´s, or next to the router, just to see if the network works perfectly or not. If it doesn´t, we know its a setting on your computer.
2. If it works perfectly, we know it´s to do with the location of either the transmission of the signal, or receiving of the signal. So you could try moving the router 1 meter in any direction, see what happens. It may be that the signal needs to go vertically through a brick wall to arrive at your pc, so moving the router so that it is at 45 degrees instead of 85 degrees may help enormously...

I AM GETTING PISSED. OMFG. My computer is as close as it can get to the router, side by side. Again it says i have full strength, and good signal, but the SPEED IS SLOWER THAN A 16k. IT took me like 5 mins to load this page. I AM PISSED. I can't play any games, or any thing. I can even do my research on the net now. my god, please tell me what i can do to fix this, i will do anything, even breaking the stupid wireless router and cracking my card open. PLEASE I NEED HELP.

 

Okay, thanks for moving the pc next to the source, we now know that it's nothing to do with the signal, so it's gotta be a setting on your destination pc. Nice!!

First things first, have you tried completely uninstalling all the drivers and related software, cold booting and reinstalling? I know this sounds like a cheap get out, but lets face it, it works on your dads pc, yet not on your own!?!

Because the next thing after that will be to try swapping the cards from your pc and your dads
